95 grinding tranny
My daughter's 95 Explorer will barely go into forward or reverse, when you apply the gas or not it grinds and rumbles much like it is going to grenade. It won't even roll down the driveway in neutral. The o/d light is flashing. When it started she said that there was a high pitch squeal and she barely made to the house and there it sets. I tried it and that's where I heard the grinding.
If I need to swap out the tranny will all 4.0 2wd trans swap regardless of what year they are?

Can't help you with what might be causing the rumbling/grinding noises as you probably won't know until you tear it apart. As for interchangeability, I would consult a Hollander interchange. Some libraries will have them. Also, some junkyards (I mean "auto recyclers") will have them and can tell you what will interchange.
