Hi everyone, hoping to get my new to me F150 tuned up and insured this weekend. The previous owner put on a bug deflector and I don't know whether or not to keep it . I have had bug deflectors on previous trucks (jacked up 4x4 F150's) and I liked the look on those trucks, not sure I care for it on a 2wd. Just hoping your input may help me decide.
I tossed mine. Debris gets between the deflector and the sheet metal and eventually starts to rust. The pic in my sig shows the deflector on, but it's long gone now.
I could see that being a problem, I will probably take it off and see how good/bad the paint is before making the final decision. I have always been partial to bug deflectors on truck but for some reason I am unsure of it on this one.
I say keep it. I can understand the rust thing. Crap does get stuck in it. I take mine off when I clean my truck and scrub it and the hood before putting it back on. Only takes a minute to take off an put back on.
Always had bug deflectors on my truck. They do help, and all I do is highway driving.
Yes depending on the model, some crap can get stuck in where it wraps around the hood lip. Every few years I took mine off to clean it, but that was when I parked and there was trees around. Now i'm far away from anything that can get in there, no more problems.
My truck is parked under large oak trees at the house. My neighbor has the same truck and recently removed his bug deflector revealing some good sized rust areas. I was lucky, there was no rust on my truck.
I went and looked tonight and there is no rust or other damage under the bug deflector. The deflector itself is in really nice shape so I think I will just keep it on for the time being and see how I like it in a few weeks. Thanks for the opinions guys, this site rocks.
I would much rather brush a few leaves off occasionally than have the paint on the leading edge of my hood chipped from gravel and junk being thrown up from the roadway... Not to mention fewer bug guts on the windshield!!
I agree, I'd rather clean out the junk that "might" get behind it then have the paint beat off the hood of my truck. I don't really care if they keep the bugs off the glass.
What is really bad is the bricknose versions, the front is so tall it really takes a beating from rocks/debris. I put a molded version on my '89 just to help with the paint/chips/rust.
2wd or 4wd is not the issue in my eyes. I've had them on all my trucks('96, 99, 00, 89), all 2wd.
thats the first thing i ordered for my 90. hated it with out one. i believe the repair manual i bought had the truck on the cover with one on it. in fact my first one cracked after 8 years so i ordered another. i feel the nose of the hood is to flat. anyways thats my 2 cents.
