I was to swap motors in my 95'. Ill be using an engine out of a 90'. My main thought/concern is difference of electrical plug ins. I have already noticed the engine bulk head connector is different. My assumption is just change harness and away i go. Right?
Right.. DO NOT use any wiring from the donor vehicle.
You also have a few other things to recognize and deal with.
1) Distributors are different because of the location of the TFI module and because the '90 has a flat tappet cam and the '95 has a roller. So ideally you want to use the '95 distributor but before installing it you need to remove the steel drive gear and install the cast version from the '90 dizzy.
2) The IAT sensor is located on the airbox in the '95 and in the lower intake in the '90. In this case the fix here is simple.. just ignore the sensor in the '90 engine and leave it unconnected.
3) Transmission flexplate. To be safe use the one that originally came with your truck, there were 4 different auto transmissions available in these trucks and in some cases the flexplates are not cross compatible despite the fact they will all bolt up, and if you use the wrong flexplate you could damage your transmission.
See. The main issue here is. The engine is not a factory for a 90' i think. I know it is a crate motor only a couple years old.. So, would that still mean that it is a flat tappet?
Second thought as well. I am thinking i have to replace the head gasket. which in that case i am sure i could figure out what kind of valve train it has. However. im looking up at parts stores and having trouble finding Head bolts. At least head bolts under $150!! Please tell me im just looking something up wrong.
You're gonna have to look and see then, remove a valve cover and the front rocker arm and pushrod and then put a bore light down the pushrod hole, if you see a dogbone around the lifter it's got a roller cam.
On that note if it turns out this motor has a correct '90 spec flat tappet cam you're gonna be pretty disappointed in the power it makes... way less than the '95 your removing.
Gearing hides a lot as does the transmission, I have driven a lot of these early trucks and they were all gutless wonders compared to the later trucks, and all those had 3.55 axles.. I can't imagine how bad an early 5.0 truck would be with 3.08 gears.
Oh.. a 460 truck.. that would have been nice to know at the start. You definitely have to look then I don't know when or even if that motor ever got a roller cam.
There must be some miss-communication here.. Originally you did not know i was talking about the 460 in my truck? correct? I just meant that we are on "Ford-trucks" it would have been self explanatory that i was talking about a truck is all... Im coming off as a rude person and i apologize. lol
Yep, we should just automatically know what engine and all the other specs are on your vehicle since it's a Ford truck.. They only offered 5 different engines in these years.......
It really helps IF you tell us what you are working on, I don't think anyone on here is a certified mind reader!!!
There was no miscommunication, you never told what you were working on, except the years.. Go back and re-read all your posts in this thread and you will see what I mean....
