i have a 1979 F-150 - 3wire Alternator. 85amp.
im trying to find out what would cause the dash light to stay on when its running.
also when i bought the truck the "Black/purple" while was runing to the positive side of the Solenoid
and the White wires and the Orangeish yellow wire was going to the voltage regulator.
its making my head hurt following wires. but if anyone has any feed back id love to have it!!
I have no idea what wire colors you're talking about. There is no purple-striped wire associated with the charging system and I don't know what "orangeish" is supposed to mean. But to answer your question, the ALT light comes on if the alternator stops producing current. You should verify this by measuring the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running. This means you need to use a multimeter. Do you promise to do this?
i checked the old ALT got Volts from alt to Postive side of Solenoid Wire[ the bat cable to check voltage in not out]
but i went ahead and got a new ALT installed check the Volts with a O meter. i got Volts comming from the ALT but the ALT lights still on and still aint charging the Batt
First off, pay attention, when he asked what battery voltage you had, answer straight, not with a bunch of jibberish. Again, what is the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running?
Second, you really need a wiring diagram. I'm sure if you seach around here a little you can find one.
Third, those alternators seldom fail, it's usually the regulator or something muddles up in the wiring.
When I read that late last night, I thought it was just me being tired. Guess not.
