How difficult would it be to take the TTB out of an 89 150 and swap it under my 73 250 Camper special 2wd? The 89 is a stick shift I6, my 73 is an auto 390. I imagine the t-case would either not fit or take heavy use of adapters to maybe divorce mount it? I love my 390, so I don't want to just swap the full drivetrain over, although I would be willing to swap the stick shift in. I know the bolt patterns for the wheels wouldn't match, but not sure of the best way to make them match. I have both trucks, complete, the 89 just needs a little work to get running; so I suppose I could just get the 89 running and use that to go out in the desert and just get a little extra height under the 73 to fit decent tires in the 33x10.5 or 34x9.5 range and maybe a limited slip or locker out back. I'm just tired of its tendency to sink in anything less than hard packed dirt roads since I live in the desert and have been stuck multiple times just trying to get work done...
X2 on not being worth it, at least to me. Anything is possible but it would be a problematic swap I'm sure. Theres nothing inherently wrong with TTB, I would prefer it over the system offered in F-150s today.
I myself would not attempt a 4x4 swap; too easy to buy one factory engineered for me to cobble one together lol, its not like they are rare. A limited slip rear end, some wider tires and some weight over the rear tires might be the simple solution to your problem. This reminds me of a conversation I had with the seller of a van recently; he was an older gentlemen from a rural area and I was looking at his van, he said to me "I like your old truck but the only thing I see wrong with it is its a 4 wheel drive, wouldnt have one. I like to hunt and fish and all that but if its somewhere I cant through, I just dont go" I got a kick out of that. This guy was in the swamps of south Mississippi too.
