Need some help with a PCM. Guys were getting ready to take the Silver Turd down to work in St. Louis area. Stopped to pick up a new plug head for the trailer, as it had been smashed......and nobody knew how....Hmmmm. Noticed that the DP Tuner chip had been unplugged when we were trouble shooting a intermittent stalling issue. Decided to re-install it in the Wal-Mart parking lot. ........Just wait, the fun is coming......5 Degrees F without wind chill, Michigan City Indiana......I get it re-installed, hook the batteries back up, truck fires up. Awesome! Then my Korean buddy that works with us starts going all the way to the left, No Start tune, All the way to the right, 80 HP Tow.....and then back to the 0 position......all before I can smack him or say stop. Truck throws a Service Engine Soon light and dies.......It will crank but no fire....LOL. My Korean friend stares at me and says " Ohh why, piece of sh**? " I sit there with a sinking feeling and shake my head. Call DP Tuner and make sure that it COULD be a PCM fuse. They confirm that. I double check the fuses....no go. So I pull the PCM/ECM, unload the truck, hook the trailer up to my Awesome Excursion that is running Tip Top, thanks again Nicmike, and head home to transfer the guys into Ol' Blue and get them on the way. Please see pic ...:
Did you pull the DP tuner back out to see if it will start? Did he put it in the no start tune? If the PCM is good if you disconnect the DP it should start.
Yep, pulled the DP Tune and re-connected the batteries. Still had the Service Engine Soon light......crank but no fire. Unhooked the batteries and let it sit for 15 minutes, reconnected and still the same issue. Had a Actron code reader, it could not connect with the computer to run a scan. I was guessing that the PCM/ECM was shot at that point...as I had checked the fuses before.
I'm guessing that it couldnt connect because it is not ford enhanced. You either need AE or Snap on scan tool with the ford bundle or the ford software. It might not be the PCM, it might be something else.
When you say switching all the way to the left then back to the right... Do you mean while sitting there idling or under way and foot on the throttle?
Yes sir....just had started the truck, it was idling when the crazy switching occurred.
We lucked out and were able to source a PCM for the Silver Turd, thanks to tappit01's suggestion. Found one 19 miles away. It had a TS performance chip/rotary ****. We installed the new PCM and put the DP Tuner back on, re-connected the batteries and we still had a Service Engine Soon light with crank and no fire . Disconnected the batteries, pulled the DP chip, reconnected the batteries and the Service Engine Light was gone.....truck cranked and fired up! So now the question is what to do. I have a suspected smoked DP chip (2000 Silver Turd 7.3) operator error, a supposed good TS Performance 6 position chip (Off PCM from a 2000 7.3) and I have a Bully Dog Power Pup programer for the X (2001 7.3).The Silver Turd is a DRW and tows 8-10K behind it and 2k in the bed. Can I have DP fix/reflash their chip? Can they reflash the TS chip? If so, should I just use the Bully Dog to put the 50 or 70 HP tune in while waiting on DP's help? Thoughts?
Whether it is smoked or just in need of flashing.... won't know till they get their hands on it. I would just pack it up and get it ready for shipping. I am sure that someone from DP Tuner will see this and let you know what to do.
i'm glad that site worked out for ya. i would see what dp has to say, might be just a free reburn. also, just throwing this out there. gear head can reburn ts style chips for $175 . i've heard real good things about them and i'm getting ready to try them out myself.
Sounds like a plan....on all counts. Will pack up the tuner/tuners and try and email Jody. I have discussed chopping off the Korean's fingers....I have known/worked with he guy for 10 years. Almost every time he touches something that is not fiber optics, I get that sinking feeling in my stomach. Everything gets "Broken down man and then you givea me ****." , as he is fond of saying to much laughter. He does cook a mean Bulgogi dinner.....but I will have to eat a lot of beef to make up for this fiasco. Thanks to all the suggestions on here, our day was much less painful. I will take that any day!
Ohhhhhh......When I do this Secret Handshake, must I have a eye patch on and end the handshake with "Yarrrrrrr!" Or is this a handshake that DP Tuner must do, in secret, at their facility? LOL. I joke now but only due to the truck being safe in my driveway.....free to have anything go wrong with it.
I know they have the instructions on their web site somewhere...But I think OP said that they have the **** switcher. Otherwise I would know how to take it out of "no Start".
