I currently have a 360 in my 75 highboy, but im looking to upgrade. I need some advice from of you guys that have done these swaps. With the 460 its got huge power but the swap is more pricey but with the 410 the engine would drop right in no problem.
Can anyone give me stats of hp and torque on both motors.
and will i really feel a huge difference in the 2 motors power wise?
460 may be cheaper in the long run, but if it was my tuck, and if I had a 410 available, I'd go 410 all the way. Much more classy, and appropriate. Although never owning one yet, I really take a liking to the old FE's, it's kindly like a piece of history.
410 has a longer stroke, it will reach a higher piston velocity at the same given rpm as the 460. Power will come in a wee bit quicker, with every spec the same. Of course more cubes = more power= less gas mileage. Either way there is always a compromise/ gain. One day 410 will be REALLY hard to come by, while there will be plenty of 460 in junk yards.
Dont know what kind of power you are looking to make but if it were me and I was rebuilding, I'd get a 390 crank and rods and use the motor you have. If a 428 crank came along easy I'd do the 410, either way I'd do one or the other before I went with a 460. I like to follow the KISS protocol though.
x2 on a 390 or 410, or even a 445 if you want to go a bit extra.
Your money goes into motor, not all the little things that need to be changed to put in a different series engine.
Also, do you have a 460 or are you going to have to pry one out of a wreck? Maybe a smogged out wheezer with enough piston clearance to drop a match into the crankcase? So you may have to do a rebuild on top of conversion costs.
With the 460 you'll also need a transmission, different motor mounts, etc. I have a mildly built 390 (428 cam, mildly ported heads, 9.5:1 piston ratio, headers and 4 bbl making +350 hp and approx. the same torque. And I really enjoy the engine. It easily pulls a 5000 lbs trail uphill at 60 mph. Rebuild your 360 .040 over with the 428 crank, to get your 416, pistons and rods, your choice of cam, 4 bbl manifold and headers. It's a fairly straight forward build.

Not to mention the fact that 460s in stock form are not impressive performance wise. The potential is there depending on your plans.
"With the 460 you'll also need a transmission, different motor mounts, etc." I dont see where you would need another trans 75hb np435,motor mounts yes.
I have a C6 tranny and due to the shorter spline you have to get a different C6 transmission for a 460 swap.
the 460 is said to be rebuilt but i have not looked at.
I think overall the 410 that i could buy is top notch runs like a charm.
Im gonna go with the 410. Seems like it will be a smoother swap and all in all perform the same as a 460.
i would think you be money head staying fe here myself. making a trans to fit the 460 will take a little work unless you know transmissions. second motor mounts will be needed then you got time looking for engine brackets. also does your highboy still have the power assist? seems like a long row to hoe just to get the big block. a stroker fe may be up your alley it seems.
I do have power assist. I think i am going to go with the 410 seems like mechanically it will have plenty of power and i can always juice it up. second money wise it will drop straight in and i dont have to worry about the transmission.
One last question as far as the extra parts such as the alternator power steering radiator starter etc will all of that from my 360 fit onto the 410
