After runing all tests discribed on the Haynes and Chilton on my 1987 Bronco TFI-IV,EEC-IV. and replacing the Distributor, I still don't have spark, the coil shows that gets the 12volts and the wiring tests ok. I'm down on asumming that the ECU on the inside firewall must be the problem.
My question is if I change this Computer unit from one found at a junk yard or a remanufactured one would I have to take it to be reprogrammed ?
So you have replaced the the control module on the distributor as well? EEC-IV should have the control module on the distributor if I recall correctly. Ford moved it around '91-'92 because it was prone to heat related failure mounted on the distributor but in '87 I think it was still on the distributor. As far as replacing the main computer, as I unsderstand it, making absolutely certain that you have replaced it with the EXACT same part number should allow you to simply swap one for the other. Don't rely on just my knowledge though. Wait and see who else responds and what they have to say.
You are exactly right, if the timing chain broke, there would be
no spark. If the teeth on the distributor drive gear wore off,
there wouldn't be any spark either. The best way to check
both of these conditions, is to see if the rotor is turning
(remove the distributor cap) when you crank the engine...
Are you guys sure ? I thought that this 302 runs the distributor with the oil pump, and then maybe the oil pump is run by the camshaft all together, who knows.
Regardless I do see that the rotor turns when I crank.
I think I'm one step closer to get brave and try to find a computer replacement.
I don't like to see my Bronco growing weeds, she is been good to me!
I had the same problem...a module needs to be replaced. Might be the TFI one if I recall correctly. I can call the mechanic that did it for me and see if he remembers which one. I lost my mind trying to figutre it out. Email me @ tom2131@stny.rr.com
