Since its spring and discussion about the top removal process is inevitable, and the concern over the high-mount stop light always seems to rear its ugly head I figured I'd run this idea up the proverbial flagpole and see what happens.
The other day I was driving home and noticed an Isuzu Amigo with the little rear soft roof folded down. Sticking up off the rear of the metal section of the roof was this LED brakelight "hoop". (Amigo's resemble Big Broncos that got left in the dryer too long... at least in physical appearance). So I came home and scoured the online forums for an Amigo Enthustiasts forum and lo and behold after posting my question, I was informed that 94-95 Amigo's were factory equipped with these little buggers. They are available from Isuzu dealers or boneyards with 94-95 Amigo's at their disposal.
They are black plastic externally with a row of red LEDs at the rear they rise about 2-2.5" above the roofline and are styled like a tiny hoop or spoiler. They arent' more than about 10-12" wide I don't think. I haven't actually gone to a dealer to inspect one for myself...yet.
Now I realize that Ford enthusiasts may have trouble with the idea of adding Isuzu components to their Ford product, however, for those who would like to retain the third brakelight on their 92-96 even with the top off, or those who would like to GAIN the light and don't have one, it is a fairly decent looking piece that looks pretty much at home on the top of the Amigo....it may well serve just as well atop a Big Bronco even if the true Blue Oval fan would deny the component's origin.
I only throw the idea out there as a method of adding a federally madated safety component (after 91 model year). It is a readily available part that has already been styled to work in a location that would be ideally suited to replace or add such a component on the full-size Bronco... even if it did add a little height to the roofline.
Now that you mention it, I guess you could go either way. I was thinking outside on the top rear of the steel portion of the roof just like the Amigo but in thinking about it, I guess you could turn it upside down and hang it underneath the roofline in the same location.
Grey, I don't think anyone would know the light is from Joe Izuzu if you didn't tell'em! I'm not too thrilled about bolting it on top of the roof, but underneath would work for me. Since I have my hardtop off for months at a time, my headliner was sagging and finally gave way. I took the sill plate from the rear edge of the bed, cut it to fit, and put screws in the trim-bolt holes for the headliner to hold it up. Mounting a third brake light to this, hanging down, is the next thing I want to do. I just want a light that would look sleek, it wouldn't matter whether it was from a Jeep or other-than-Ford vehicle.
The Amigo brake light caught my eye so I am going to track one down. Kind of a nice piece and its black. Would probably help with that sagging headliner too. Got a day off tomorrow, so I'll get a part number from Isuzu if I can and post it.
Scratch the idea of getting the stupid thing from Isuzu. I didn't even ask for the part number when they told me the pricetag. Go find one in a boneyard for 20 bucks. Isuzu wants $425.00 for that lil' sucker.
