120 volt outlets?

Rear bumper on my 1972 F250 4x4 looks stock or at least early and has a well placed, well protected dual 120 volt outlet in the rear bumper. Most of the wiring is gone but I do see some remnants with fuse blocks and such. I was reading through some literature on these trucks and there was an option of having an Onan generator on board . . . . anyone have experience with those? Ever seen one? With big batteries and inverters and such so common now, it seems like I could get those outlets working that way but the onan generator gets my vintage off road survivalist juices flowing . . .

Yup, I think it was called the Contractor package.

Had an F250 local to me that was for sale last fall with this on it. Had thoughts to buy it just because.

Not part of the Contractors Special Package. These were 1969/70 F100/350 8' Styleside pickups with tool compartments mounted atop the bedsides.

This is the Onan Generator aka Power Pack, optional for all 1969/72 F100/350's.

FTE member Brady Couchman has a 1970 F350 Crew Cab with this generator. Brady is a FTE SoCal Chapter member, I've seen the truck in person at GTG's.

The left fender inner apron is different when this is installed.

yep, that's it, the power pack. Thanks guys. Number Dummy, the one that you saw, was there any kind of factory 120 outlets on the vehicle that you recall? If I remember right there is a briggs and Stratton motor running the generator. Did the owner of the one you saw use it and did he like it in a practical way or more in a rare and unique way?

I have to admit I love these kind of obscure factory options. I'm quite sure I'll never find one for myself but I love looking at them. Kind of like record players in cars but more practical.

Just to clean things up I have the generator but its not installed...need the mount the last owner of the generator took it out of the truck and mounted it on a dolly and cut up the frame mount. Also need the inner fender. I will have to look back in my emails but I had a guy email me the cad like drawings of the mount and maybe the fender.

Bought it from a guy in Canada from this board for those wondering

drawing

Brady, I checked out some of your stuff and I saw a 2wd to 4wd power steering drawing . . . I assume this is a schematic for putting a 2wd power steering box on a non power steering 4wd truck. I was unable to really get a good look at it. Is it posted in the power steering conversion section I've seen here? Have you done it? I'm a little ambivalent about it but I do have a complete system on the F350 I'm using as a parts truck. If it's costly I'm out. If it's drilling and welding a bit I'm in. So you're the guy with the Power Pack. Very cool. If you find that drawing of the inner fender I'll check it against my own. I'm kind of doubting that mine is correct but if it is that would be something to ponder.
Cheers.

This kinda applies to this post. Many years ago I had a 120 plug that ran from the alternator, before the regulator. It was enough to run an electric drill. Not for electronic equipment.

My 69 crewcab had one of those plug ins wired into the alternator. It might run a small drill if you revved the engine up. Then forget to turn the switch back and it runs the battery down.

Thanks for the alternator hookup info guys. This sounds like what was going on with my rig. looking at the pics of the Power Pak and then at my inner fender well and the total lack of any kind of mounting hardware for such a heavy thing I am fairly certain this truck did not come with one.
So, you guys are saying that an alternator that puts out what around 15 volts is capable of running a small drill? The mention of a switch sounds like the use of a small inverter? Curious. I already have the outlet and some kind of light guage romex wiring on the frame . . . maybe I'll look into getting it working again. If you could elaborate a bit.
cheers.

This was in the days before inverters were in use in cars. The alternator is capable of putting out enough voltage to run a drill.
