Just purchased a 96 powerstroke, 320 000 kms. Leaks oil which the guy hid at first. I noticed it shortly after purchasing the truck. The issue is the truck lags power seemingly when its cold. It almost sounds like an exhaust brake is on, it comes on intermittently with a whooshing sound and growl like and exhaust brake then power loss. I thought it was due to low oil so I filled it up and it worked until I started the truck the next day, it started doing it again. Once truck comes up to temp it stops. Any one else deal with this issue before?
That's normal. It the exhaust back pressure valve. It's suppose to help warm up the engine faster. You can unplug it if you like. There is a plug under the driver side of the turbo just unplug it and problem solved
Haha thanks. I feel like an idiot. I have an 88 idi which has the high idle, I was wondering why this truck had no means to heat it up faster but apparently it does. Lol glad its not something wrong.
Mine did the same thing the other day. Took me a while to figure out what was going on but then it cleared up. It got down to like 18 that night so even plugged in it was cold for us. That should be the end of our cold spells for the year! Gotta' love the south... time to get fishin
