I would be surprised if you don't have both valves open on at least one cylinder. That's called overlap. The camshaft is designed to open the intake before the exhaust closes. This helps pull in the intake charge.
I'm sure if you have a bad enough exhaust leak you will hear something but if its that bad already I'm sure there will be a visible sign of soot there but in my opinion if you want to truly check the exhaust system you are going to have to close the exhaust valves to isolate the exhaust system. Even on a fresh motor you could have 10% leakage per cylinder on a leak down test. If you have 5 exhaust valves open at one time you will have leakage around all 5 pistons not counting if any of those cylinders have an intake valve open also. I'm curious how this will work out for you but I can't see it helping much but for your sake I hope it does.
We do have overlap.. but what you are describing is scavenging. And we don't have it or don't use it... We instead have forced induction.
Overlap that is excessive will cause engine exhaust to be pressed into the intake. The first attempts at aftermarket cams had this issue.
If you are running a turbo too hard and floating the valves causing excessive overlap you can have enough exhaust backpressure to push exhaust into the intake.
I see you are thinking about the wicked wheel, have you thought or seen the Billet wheel that Riff Raff offers? A little more $ but the boost seem to be higher with this wheel. Might be something else to consider.
I did see the other wheels that Clay offers and was wondering about them. The cost difference for me doesnt matter, if im in there I want to use the best wheel possible.
That said do you believe the billet wheel is the best option?
I don't think you need to do the .50 mod. If I remember you have an 03 which have the clip upgrade?
I do have an '03, build date mid to late '02 IIRC. This has me curious now I dont remember seeing anything about the newer trucks having the upgraded clip? I was under the impression that all the '99.5-'03 7.3s had the harness problem?

I have the billet wheel and I love it. It's a great option
Out of curiosity what kind of boost numbers did you gain? All the boost gain at the top end or did you gain any at normal lower crusing speeds? And last but not least did you notice it spooling up any faster?
There is a lot of good info in here.. as well as complaining, arguing and engine theory all mixed in..
Short version.. I gained 6psi up high. maybe 1-2 psi cruising. And the spool is worlds and away better. It is much more responsive to spool up.. on my van turbo and my buddy's stock turbo..
