86 F250 351w c6 tranny restoration help

Hey guys this web site it awesome and very helpful.

Just to narrow down what I'm looking for..

I am restoring an old mud truck. 86 f250 with a 351w and C6 tranny.
The motor is seized so I bought another.

I am looking for the average cost it is going to cost me to rebuild the 351w.

Also should I add gt40 heads, e cam, intake, exhaust etc to help move the 44s that are on it.

I am not looking to change to a 460 or any other motors besides the 351w.

If anyone could help me out on the average prices of these bolt ons and how much to install would be very helpful.

I was not planning on rebuilding this motor I bought but many people advised me to do so.

FYI my budget is about $3000

Figure about $1500 to do a decent rebuild on the bottom end. Yes you need GT40 heads or better the stockers are way too small for this displacement. I wouldn't suggest an E cam unless you got one kicking around and can't afford the right cam for the motor.. which is gonna depend upon the heads you pick. Hint: Anything smaller than AFR180s limits the powerband to 5000rpm and below. 44" tires? You need 5.xx gears regardless what you do to the motor.

Thanks.

I'm not worried about the gears yet. I just want to get the rig running.
Don't you think $1500 is a very expensive rebuild?

And does anyway one know a good combination of heads and cam? I herd certain cams cause problems with gt40 heads.

$1500 would be towards the high end of it and I'm factoring in some money to recondition the heads as well. The other $1500 of your budget will go towards buying the heads, cam and springs, other valvetrain parts needed, headers, fasteners, and induction(carb and intake).

Do you have GT40 heads already?

What would I have to change to drop a 460 in her? Should bolt up right to my C6 tranny right?
Already have the radiator to a 460

This question might be better answered in the truck section.

I was trying for a cheap rebuild on my boat motor (302). Long story short, there is no such thing, at least not without risk... If you aren't meticulous as to do a ground up rebuild, you are at risk for something really simple and small to do a whole lot of damage making you start all over wasting time and money.

Do it right and in the long run it will be much cheaper.

A bigger engine wouldn't necessarily cost a whole lot more to rebuild so that might produce a better return on your investment.

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while but I finally have dropped the replacement 351w in the 86 f250.

The good news..

I started the replacement 351w that came out of an 1883 or 1984 Bronco on the ground the other day and she ran great with a new Holley carb.

The bad news...

I cant get the replacement 351w to tightly bolt against the C6 tranny.
The torque convertor bolts meet the holes in the flywheel but wont come through enough where I can put the bolts on.
The torque converter is original and in great shape the truck only has 15k miles on it.
The replacemt 351w was in a 1983 or 1984 Bronco with standard transmission.
But I used the fly wheel off the original motor and like I said also the original torque converter.
The metal seal "I believe the flex seal" is off the replacement 351w, due to the one of the original motor being bent. Maybe This is my problem?

I don't want to force the engine and tranny together with the transmission bolts in fear they might snap in the block.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also attached some pictures

As soon as I read this line I was gonna ask about the pilot bearing.

Yea, the pilot bearing would definitely be an issue. The block plate from the manual transmission also is hard to deal with in using it with an automatic as it lacks a removeable inspection plate to access the torque converter bolts. How tight did you get the bellhousing bolts in trying to get the converter studs through the flexplate ? If you got em tight enough, you could have broken the front pump in the transmission. I know this happens with the C4's, not so sure with the C6's

Not that tight in fear I would have broken a Tranny bolt, How can I tell if I have damaged the front pump in the transmission?

It doesn't take much in a C4, the gear the converter fits inside is extremely brittle, it's a hard steel, but brittle. Aside from taking the front pump apart, maybe you might be able to shine a light in there and see if there are cracks in the gear where the converter plugs into. You will break the gear long before breaking a bolt.
