I got a 99 XL V10 F350 Dually to pull my 6500 lb camper.
It sits most of the time and only gets used to haul garbage and some other minor household hauling duties. It's not my daily driver.
I'm thinking about selling my Dually and my daily driver and buying a 04-08 F150 super crew with 3:73 gear ratio and the 5.4 v8 to serve as my daily driver and my trailer hauler.
Move on past 04 and up closer to 08 if U want the dual purpose. U will miss that dually though. If it has little rust I would keep it! Just sell the car, add some cool stuff to it, like stacks and mufflers. Assuming with the dually U are also a trucker the stacks add up an keep the exhaust out of the camper. U won't smell it while hitching and unhitching or around the camp.
Stacks? On a V10 or any pick-up for that matter. Please no! Stop the insanity! It's a pickup not an autobot. I do agree that the 08 is the best year. No plug issues and phaser problems are not nearly as common.

Sorry, I love stacks, but stick to putting them on diesels. Especially diesels with straight exhaust. They're cool when they've got the diesel sound and black smoke rolling out of them.
As for the towing, you won't be as happy with the 5.4L as with your 6.8L V10. Don't get a 5.4L 3 valve engine unless the spark plugs have already been replaced, because you may get a surprise there... They had a design where they made the spark plugs really long, and they're notorious for breaking off in cylinder heads and costing a lot in labor to get them out. It's probably not something you want to attempt yourself.
If you want to get something to drive daily and tow well, buy an F-250 or F-350 with a 7.3 PowerStroke. They'll tow like the V10 (possibly better) and make 18+ mpg empty. Plus you have that diesel engine that'll last almost forever.

No spark plug removal issues after 07. Different head design and different spark plug. Difficult to do yourself is in the eye of the wrench holder. As is cool. I think stacks are ridiculous. If you wanna drive a big rig there are plenty of places that will pay you instead of you having to pay to turn your personal vehicle into one. But hey if everyone had the same opinion what a boring world this would be.
Thanks everyone, stick to an 08 F150. I really do need a dual purpose truck and I am thinking about a 7.3 F250. The trailer is small but that doesn't mean a bigger one is not in the future.
7.3 is a great engine no doubt about that but in my area the people that have them for sale tend to be pretty proud of them. If you find a good deal on one ****** it up for sure.
