Good morning, I try to read a few post each day to learn as much as possible. My question, is there one source for edumaction on diesels? How to drive, how to maintain, how to tow, etc.
When I sell my current setup, I would like to upgrade for now and future towing. So I want to make sure I understand all things diesel. Never had one, and some of these post scare me
They are not as big a deal as folks make them out to be.
Get in, turn the key and drive.
Yes you need to buy CJ-4 approved oil, Don't just pick any oil off the shelf. Most oil bottles that are CJ-4 approved will say "Diesel" somewhere on the packaging.
Yes the diesel use 13 qts oil vs 5 or 6 you are used to in your gas engines. So oil changes are a little more expensive.
Yes you need to pay a little more attention to fuel filters. Change them every 15,000 miles and drain a few ounces of fuel out them monthly to make sure there is no water in your fuel. ( takes 30 seconds). Fuel filters cost $55 and it will take 20 minutes to change both the primary and secondary filters.
If you have heavy loads that need the power of diesel to tow or haul them. Buy the truck and be happy.
Your in the best place too learn. Just keep reading and absorbing info. Keep in mind forums like this attract people with problems (actual or perceived) , so don't worry yourself to death whenever a "I've got a problem post" comes along. Enjoy your truck and be sure to post pics of your new Ford!
Good place to learn here but also good place to make yourself paranoid and crazy (like I was doing) and not enjoy the truck as much as you should be.
Painted Horse got it right, don't worry, be happy.
Remeber, 90% of the people with problems and complaints are going to post them on the internet. A very small % that are happy and problem free will post their joy
I consider myself a diesel newbie also. Just over 2 years now. This is a great site for information but as others have said you need to "filter" everything. I have a great dealer that doesn't try to oversell their service. Their mechanics are great and take the time to explain things. As others have told you enjoy and don't worry about the negative posts. The greatest advantage to the diesel is pulling power & fuel economy. For my application I think the savings in fuel far exceed any extra maintenance cost. When you trade or sell your diesel you will recoup all or most of the extra initial outlay.
thanks all, just trying to keep the learning curve high. I'm looking forward to the upgrade in truck and camper. We try to go twice/month at least, and then one longish trip a year. As our boys get older, I'm sure the trips will get longer and friends will join etc. I'm sure I will be asking lots of questions along the way......
