New to the forum. Just bought my first Ranger. 2005 XLT, 3.0, auto, 2wd, 27000 miles. Very happy with the truck (traded a 110000 mile S10 and hope to get similar life)
Got a question, no cargo light available from Ford. I work at an independent repair shop and have access to a Ford dealer's parts listing, TSB's, etc, and the cargo light option seems to be NLA. I found a used light via our local salvage yard.
Best way to hook up?
Does your 05 have the dash mounted instrument light dimmer rheostat???? If so, does it have the full up/click on position to turn the dome light on???? If so, connect the cargo lamp wiring there. If it doesn't have that on position to turn the dome light on, maybe consider also picking & using the dash dimmer rheostat off the salvage yard vehicle.
Yes, it does. I was thinking that since the dome light is right at the same location near the existing CHMSL, I could run a jumper off of the dome light power to the cargo light wiring and just use the dimmer switch to turn on the light. I realize the dome light would be on too, but it seems most of the trucks I see work that way.
When you remove your cab exterior high mount rear brake light to replace it with your salvage part that has the bed light option, look inside the hole, bet the wire for the bed light is already there, so all you'll have to do is plug it in!!!!! Let us know how your lighting upgrade goes.
Mine came with the bed lamp in the high mount brake light & the wiring was already molded into the connector, bet yours is also if the bed lamp assy was offered as an option in 05.
You might consider cleaning & rubbing on a light film of dielectric grease around the inside edge of the salvaged lamp assy seal, to make sure its water tight when you snug the fastners up. Don't over torque the fastners.
If it's not too much to ask, could you possibly shoot some pictures if you choose to install it? I've been wishing mine had a cargo lamp since I bought it. Pictures of an install like this would be invaluable!
My 2004 didn't have wiring for the cargo light... but the dome light will provide the power, if you get ahold of a 2003 or earlier CHMSL with cargo lights (direct swap).
I considered adding the cargo lights... but then I decided I didn't really need them with a hard tonneau cover.
When I get around to it (and my new hip finally heals from surgery) I'm going to add bed lights under the tonneau.
I understand the C/L I got is from a 2003 Ranger. I haven't had the chance to get into the wiring of the truck to see what kind of plug/power I have.
I will post pics (not sure how) when I start the job.
Mounted the light yesterday. Took pics, but lost them in the transfer. A quick rundown of how it went:
The light came with the power pigtail still connected, but the wires cut about a half inch fromthe plug! The trucks power pigtail was the same plug but had only the brake light and ground wires (no cargo light wiring). I removed the C/L power terminal and soldered a jumper wire to it and re-installed in the pigtail. I ran the jumper to the cab light power terminal and voila! cargo lights, brake light and cab light. Very happy and thanks to all for your help and info.
OK, good feedback on your cargo light rework/upgrade install & to hear all went well & now, without too much trouble, you have light on the subject.....so to speak!!!! lol
