battery question

ok, searched around quite a bit and did not find a answer to this one.i have a 97 PSD and when i first start it up the voltage gauge for the batteries needles about a quarter of the gauge on start up. then after a minute or so the needle goes to a little over half the gauge... is this normal?

totally normal. Its the glow plug system that is keeping the battery gauge down so low. As soon as they kick out the gauge comes back up. All is well.

Yes. What you're seeing is the load from the glow plug system. When the glow plugs shut off after a short time, your voltmeter pops up to the usual spot because your charging system is no longer encumbered by the glow plugs.
