05 excursion Fuel sender/ compass fuel computer problem

I have a 05 excursion, the overhead console display ,and a P0460 code started very close together, are they related? I have inspected the wiring going up to sender unit as much as possible without pulling the tank and found no problem. I am still getting proper fuel to engine, but gas gauge is inoperable, I could really use some help with this. Thanks

A quick way to diagnose the root cause is to unplug the overhead display. If the error or gas gauge operation remains the same I would venture a guess to say you have a fuel sending unit or wiring issue.

Some info from my Ford Service DVD:

PINPOINT TEST B: INCORRECT FUEL GAUGE INDICATION

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
Test Step Result / Action to Take B1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) SELF-TESTS
  • Check for recorded instrument cluster and PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
If instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, GO to B3 .

If PCM DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual to continue diagnosis of the PCM DTCs.
