One step forward......two steps back

I don't know if any of you darksiders get caught up in this, but lately I've been sliding backward on my build by changing something that I had already fabricated. Case in point, recently bought seats that I like a lot better than the seats that I already had and installed mounts for. Decided to change out the drum brake rear that I had set up and installed, for a disc brake rear and while I was at it, the rear that I pulled at the salvage yard had a sway bar setup that looked like it would work in my truck.

Sooooo I'm back to fabricating new seat mounts, sand blasting the rear axle and doing R&R on worn parts, setting pinion angle, welding new spring perches, paint, and figuring out if the sway bar can be used.

I've made some progress, but I've got to stop shooting myself in the foot or I won't ever get this build finished.

Drew,,,

trying to take my title eh ??? I am the re-do poster child for this forum...

it's all part of it and anyone that says they don't change horses mid-stream
it's hiding something

just do it like you want it and don't let anyone turn you in another direction\

This is a standard part of doing a build, they are never really done, they just reach a reasonable pause point for a while. The longer a build takes, the more chance there is that something new/better will come along or you'll change your mind. The deeper you are in the build, the easier it is to justify a major change. That's how most of us end up with a sizable collection of "extra" parts. Welcome to the insanity, there is no real cure.

It's good to know I'm not sitting in this boat alone.

It still kinda drives me nuts knowing that I've spent a lot of time on a particular part of my build only to "can it" and do something else.

It's happening to me, even on little things. And being new to this, I'm still discovering the "correct" order to do things. It gets overwhelming at times, but I love this forum for helping me keep my head on straight.

And, I'm learning to accept the ol' "One Project At A Time Philosophy." Still is fun though.

I had a build take 8 years, off and on. Last summer I decided to get after it and get "done". Then I found I was stressing out a little on some stuff and had to step back and realize it's supposed to be fun, get done what you can and enjoy the journey. I can't say how much stuff I tore out and re-did. Some of it was just because I didn't like the way it looked and other stuff like the pedals took 3-4 times of tearing it all out and starting over just to get the function and ergonomics right. enjoy.

How disappointing, I thought by the title of the thread someone had written my biography! I'm sorry to know I'm not the only one....

Definitely not the only one. I have the same problem. What I really hate though is when I think it will only take 3hrs and it ends up taking me 3x as long is what drives me crazzzzzy and then when I have to scrap and start over for whatever reason it's like 10 steps back...lol. I wish I had the natural fabrication/build skills that you guys on this board have. The members of this board always amaze me with what you all come up with to get these old trucks back on the road.

Drewski keep at it because that truck is really going to be a nice ride someday soon.

That's a nice rear end you got there! Mine is leaking and I don't have the skill you do to fix it. I guess the downside of having too many skills is you keep creating new projects to utilize those talents.

I bought all the equipment for my shop, e.g., acetylene/oxy welding outfit, MIG welder, lathe, arc welder, grinder, polisher, ad nauseam. But I learned a long time ago that a fool with a tool is still a fool. I am great at taking things apart; it's the putting back together that I fall short

Now if I could only borrow you and AX for a few weeks to get my rear in gear, I'd be cruising again. But then again I don't have the remaining years to invest in fabrication skills so I'll be off to buy a new third member for the 9N and call it a day ( or in my case a few weeks).

I find that when I get frustrated or uptight, It's best to just walk away for a while. But the "a while" has turned into almost a year a couple times, lol.
Once I convinced myself it was more about the journey than about arriving, I find a lot of things more enjoyable. It's supposed to be fun, try to keep it that way.
While I do envy some of us that do it faster and better, and they are an inspiration, I never get down by comparing myself.

We've always said that about Drew.

Yes Drew, most Darksiders go through it on some phase of their build. I did a lot of bodywork on parts I later tossed in the dumpster.

Heck...I've created my share of scrap. You don't think I'd show you all my screw ups do you? I do enjoy fabrication, but I would like to drive this truck a little before I start worm farming. I have enjoyed the journey on this build but it has been a long one. For some reason this thing has hung around while lots of other projects have come.......been finished...... and are long since gone

all I have to say is at least you guys are in the damn stream! I am standing a couple feet from the bank just stareing blankly at the water swirling by and another year has gone without more than a few hours of progress on my truck.
looking good. its going to be a nice ride someday.
