Changed the fuel filters, oil, and coolant filter today on my stepsons 2006 F250. Bought 2 months ago. As title states I found rust particles in filter cap, inside filter and inside HFCM. Filter was also black, aftermarket. All factory caps. Truck has 71K miles. He 's overseas, Marine, and won't be home a year. Secondary filter was clean and housing. Should I expect problems from this? I've never seen anything like this in any of the 7.3L I have owned. Hope it is just from not being drained regularly. Will have to keep an eye on it. Thanks for any info.
That's what I was hoping. I've always used OEM, especially important on the 6.0 I've read due to design differences. Having to learn all this new stuff for proper 6.0 maintanence but I am having fun.
Please extend our THANK YOUS to your stepson for his service to our Country!!! As far as the rust go's take a clean white rag and wrap it around your finger. Remove the fuel cap and swab the fill tube. I believe this will be the source of his rust problem. You can also use a flash light as an aide for a visual inspection. The good news is the fuel tanks are plastic and there are a limited amount of parts that are exposed to air and the subsequent corrosion that results. The fill tube can easily be removed from the truck and cleaned with a small wire wheel that attaches to the end of a Drill Motor. Buy one that has a hollow shank (if you can find one) and drive a 16d nail into the end . Clip off the head to make an okie extension. Using this method will allow you reach all the way into the tube for a thorough cleaning. Now for the bad news, the fuel level sender will also be affected by the corrosion. The sensor will read a full tank then no reading where the corrosion is. When the truck computer sees a dramatic change in fuel levels it will set a CEL I forget the code # at this time. To replace the fuel level sensor you have to drop the tank from the truck and enter from the top. You might as well harpoon the tank while your in there. Plan on spending $400.00 for the sender. I've driven mine 2yrs. With just the fill tube cleaning
