Yes, the 351M is the same pattern as the 460.
List of Ford bellhousing patterns - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whether or not the bellhousing in your ad is actually from a 351M...no idea.

Ryan, There are 3 basic bells of this era, a round top for the FE 352-390, flat top 5 1/2" bolt pattern 302, 351W, 300 six, flat top 7 1/2" spread 351M 429, 460.

Appears that you should be good to go.

One of the guys on the 460 forum said based on the picture in the add that one is a SBF bolt pattern? Can someone confirm?

you'd be better off asking that question in the 335/385 series engine forum- i think its safe to say almost no one in this forum is running a M-series engine.

or as Jowilker said, you could just measure it.

personally, i never trust myself- when i look at transmissions, i carry a block/bellhousing spacer plate with me and make sure everything lines up.

bellhousing

Black snake, Just be sure that you also get the dust shield that locates the starter correctly and also the correct flywheel as later 460s were externally balanced. I know for sure that a "M" series bellhousing mounts to a 460.

FE flywheel should work too. 78 and earlier engine anyway, don't know about the later 460s.

Which is it? The cast number is D97A-7505- per the ad Ford 351m" bell housing
No such ID/casting number, it should be D9TA-7505-? But, the suffix is missing, so there's no way to ID it. And, be aware that there are TWO different F100/350/Bronco 351M/400 bellhousings.

The difference has to do with the clutch fork, clutch fork ball pivot, clutch release rod (pedal to Z bar) and the Z bar itself. These parts are specific to one or the other.

Ford bellhousing part numbers: D7TZ-7505-A = 1977/78 and 1979 351M/400 before serial number DG0,001 / D9TZ-7505-B = 1979 351M/400 from serial number DG0,001 & 1980/82.

ALL 1968/82 460's came w/a C6. 1983 was the first year the 460 was available w/a manual trans (and 4WD). All 1983/97 460's came w/a hydraulic clutch.

Incorrect, the 460 engine changed mid-model year 1979, not in 1978.

1971/73 429, 1971/78 460 & some 1979 460's: The block casting number is D1VE-6015-AB

Mid-model year 1979, 1980 and later: The block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB .. has a weighted spacer.

The 1979/97 flexplate, 1983/97 flywheel & 1979/97 harmonic balancer are specific to this casting number.

1979: This was a "running change" so, there are no before/from serial numbers/production dates to go by.

Ryan I didn't look at your link yesterday, It is indeed a small block. NO GO.

The top holes are 2in. further apart on what you want.

I said 78 and earlier, didn't want to confuse the guy with mid year change 79 stuff that I didn't have the particulars on, just keep it safe.. You know, I'm just an old seat of the pants junk yard crawler who has learned most of what I know the hard way and before computers. Sorry if that annoys your **** self there ND.
