I was told this is a better forum for this post so I apologize if you read it in the other.
Just got back from a long trip - truck was great! Unloaded and cleaned up a bit - went to start and move my truck - no go! Just turns over and doesn't fire up. Starter and battery sound great just doesn't want to start.
I can hear the Fuel Pump Hum - I verified there is spark. I held down the inertia switch reset button and tried but no luck there either.
Not sure where to go from here. Any ideas would be great.
Good thing it died in the driveway accept now I can't get in/out the garage!
Pull the codes and check for power coming through the EEC Pwr relay. The Haynes manual shows the wiring diagram, and you can ID the relay by wire color. It's either the brown or green relay near the L hood hinge.
if you have spark, it is probably fuel related, Check the shrader valve on the fuel rail for pressure, Watch your eyes too! I believe in 87 they had two fuel pumps, a low pressure in-tank and a high pressure on the frame rail.
The check valve is in the other tank with the fuel pump I believe. Both fuel pumps work together. Ford recomends replacing both pumps as a set for some reason. Check the fuel pressure at the rail it should be about 40psi and go from there. you can also pull the vaccume line off of the fuel pressure regulator that is on the fuel rail. If there is gas in there it is shot. then I would check the fuel pumps because I believe that you have two pumps on your rig.
Each pump has a check valve, but on the 2-pump system, it's usually the reservoir on the L frame rail above the rear axle that sticks. Someone posted brief instructions on disassembling & cleaning it a few months ago, but I don't remember in which forum.
I think the engine would at least sputter if that were the problem, though.
So the 10 sec. hum that I am hearing is the low pressure pumps in the tank? I'll check the pressure and that will tell me if fuel is making it past the high pressure pump on the rail?
Check the extra ground wires on the battery. There are some plastic connectors if you follow the wires down that get crusty and break, when these wires are not making connection the pickup will not start. This was the cause of a problem I had the one time in its life my pickup didn't start.
