way too rich

I recently bought a 79 F250 with a straight six it had been sitting for a few years before I bought it. I got it running and ran some fresh gas and carb cleaner through it but it blows heavy black and gray smoke and runs real rough at idle. I changed the plug wires, fuel filter and oil but it still runs bad seems to be burning way to much gas I turned the mixture screw all the way in and took the carb apart to see if the float was sticking open but no help. any ideas what could be doing this?

thanks

John

Just because the float isn't stuck doesn't mean it isn't the problem. Some of the composite floats like to soak up fuel and get heavy so they don't float as well. Sometimes the combination of this plus fuel pressure is all it takes to overcome the needle and seat. I would pull off the fuel line and plug it so that it doesn't feed the carb and run the engine. If it runs better after some fuel burns off this is probably what is happening. Another thing you can try is looking down the carb at idle to see if fuel is entering the engine from somewhere it isn't supposed to. It is also possible that the power valve is bad and dumping extra fuel into the engine, but that should not affect it when you're on the gas; only at idle and part throttle cruise.
