Extra capacity fuel tanks
1. Does anybody have any experience with the Wild Horses "Sherman Tank"?? Is the sending unit reliable? How's the install with that track system?
2. If I get the more common one that's available fro JBG and WH, is there anything extra I'll need to buy? Anybody have ground clearance issues with them? I'm running a protofab plate bumper in back...
Its the internet, and everybody's got an opinion, so fire away! Spend my money for me!
On the square expanded capacity tank I would highly recommend adding isolation to the setup.
When you first get the tank test fit it with a block of wood and a bottle jack and make sure the kicks on the top of the tank hit the rear floor of the body, they do not always do this. You might need up to 1/2" epdm rubber to make this so. Attach rubber/wood to the top of the kicks with a beam of silicone adhesive sealant to keep it in place.
The front of the tank will usually hit the crossmember right in front of the fuel tank and therefore need isolation there too. Also isolate the strap where it contact the tank with teflon, or you can use strips cut from the epdm pipe insulation rubber sheets sold in the plumbing department at Lowes.
IMHO, adding one of these tanks is a little more than a direct "bolt in" to really make it work right.
I am kinda used to fabricating and modifying stuff to get a kick-*** installation....
I like the idea of having the sending unit inserted at the top, where it's less likely to leak. I also like the idea of easily being able to add an in tank fuel pump later if I do an efi swap(without buying the really expensive one from NW products). Also, no need to isolate anything if its bolted rigid to the frame....
