I am setting up my 86 F250 460, 4x4 for towing an 8 - 10,000lb Fifth Wheel. It is my belief that, more efficent power and torque will take me anywhere. I don't want to be in Denali National Park and not be able to make it up the mountain.
I have added a Weiand 8012 intake with a Holley 3160,750 cfm. Also an MSD 8580 along with a MSD 6al ignition control box and Blaster 2 coil has been added. Next week a Cloyes 1122 and new water pump will go in. I am beginning research on headers and exhaust.
I currently have 16 inch wheels, Should I go to 17 inch?
Where should I concentrate my efforts from here on out? Transmission, drive axles etc.
If it were me i would
Definately add or upgrade tranny cooler
Be 100% sure my cooling system is perfect.
Upgrade my pads if not calipers and rotors too.
17" wheels will make room for bigger brakes and make a smaller sidewall firming the bodyroll a bit.
Make all the torque i can.
Your doubling if not tripling your trucks overall weight. You have to go and you have to whoa. Make choices to help you do both.
I don't like electric fans. They are ok if you re-design the whole electrical system. Fans that do anything draw a lot of current, and take a high output alternator and the wiring to support the fans. That means relays for the fans, temperature controllers, etc.
Same reason I don't like headers on these trucks. I know what they do, and I admit I like the sounds, but they don't fit right under the truck, and the complete exhaust system has to be changed and custom made for them to be hooked up, and then you have a tranny maintenance nightmare when you are done.
I think you should be trying this thing out as you change stuff. How do you like it so far? What has made the biggest difference? Have you noticed any difference at all?
