OK,it's a Taurus but it's the 3.0 Vulcan. On the highway crusing easy, now and then I'll get a stumble. It's like the key is turned off and back on.The tach stays steady but the car stumbles like the key was cycled quickly.I had to put a fuel pump in it a few weeks ago and now it is starting every time but this stumble has me stumped.
What year is it???? Do you have a CEL/SES light lit & if so, what trouble codes do you have stored in the engine computer. Most autoparts stores will scan the computer at no cost if your CEL/SES light is lit. Then post All code Numbers, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
If no trouble light lit, its likely a spark or fuel delivery problem. Could be a cracked plug ceramic, coilpack breakdown, if you have an under hood squeek, passenger side high up, back close to the firewall EDIT: (Woops forgot this is a sidewinder Vulcan), so the noise would be more to the drivers side rear), it could be the cam sensor/sync bearing going out, which the Vulcan engine is noted for, intermittent fuel pump power relay, acting out ignition switch ect, ect, ect, so we need some more clues like trouble code numbers & more historical feedback, to make a more focused guess.
Some thoughts for consideration, let us know how your trouble shoot goes.
i had a van that did that very same thing right after i had an in tank fuel pump put on it. (work truck so Penske did the job). i would drive on the hwy at 50 to 70 mph and it would literally die for a second. i felt the power steering quit, the dash gauges dropped to nothing for as much as 3 or 4 seconds then it would start again!! man i just knew it was going to go out as i was on a 70mph turn and be the end of me. i finally took it in to the dealership and told them about the recent pump change also. they found that the mechanic that put the pump in didn't change out an electrical connection to the fuel pump that was questionable while he was right there with the tank dropped and pump pulled out, and in a big hurry i guess. where it was doing it everyday of driving 100 miles at work or so it has not ever done it since. and that was a year ago!! hope you find it!
More thoughts came to mind, acting out TPS sensor, dirty MAF sensor either of which if not responding to changes in throttle position, or intake air flow, could allow fuel trim to go lean when we go at throttle up & cause stumble. same for lazy O2 sensors, that are slow to provide feedback to the computer, making it slow to adjust fuel injector squirt time to keep fuel trim in spec for what we're asking the vehicle to do.
I have a handheld scanner that didn't show any codes.I was watching the tach when it did it the other day and the tach stayed steady, didn't drop RPM.I did notice the squeak one day last week in the colder weather.I put a cam sync. in it at around 60,000mi.It didn't have any driveabilty issues then, just the noise.Could the cam sync. do this?Maybe the Autozone replacement is only good for 50,000mi.
