My buddy has a 96 F350, 4x4 Regular cab, long box, single rear wheel.. He's looking to put on some higher offset rims on it along with bigger tires, and was asking me what I thought a safe load rating would be. He doesn't ever haul a load with the truck, as it's strictly his mud toy.
He was looking at a lot of steel rims from Pro Comp and US Wheel, and most of them have a weight rating of 2000 to 2200 lbs. To me, that seems like it would be alright, but I wasn't sure and figured I'd ask all of your input on what you think would be an adequate load rating for said truck.
I just talked to my buddy again, and he was telling me that he was the most concerned about the price of the rims, because he doesn't want to spend a fortune on rims. Which I guess I can understand not wanting to stick a fortune into a mud truck. But just being a play toy that doesn't haul a load, doesn't touch the pavement, I'm thinking that the truck might be okay on those rims.
I do agree with you Brad, that it would be smart to stick with 3400lbs wheels, but do you think he could get by running those rims? A 1200lb buffer is quite a bit of wiggle room for something that never sees a load, I think anyway.
I don't know about the OP's friends truck, but my stock Reg Cab 4x4 F350 only weighs around 4800lbs unloaded with me in the truck and both tanks mostly full. That would be a fair bit more reserve weight capacity than 1200lbs.
Of course, I'm not going to recommend the OP's friend underspec his truck; once you start modifying a truck for a specific purpose, then you must take into account every aspect of what you will be using if for, as Diesel Brad notes, if the truck is jumped, then for sure, every aspect (wheels included) needs to be chosen or designed to handle the expected conditions.
Now, what if the OP's friend was starting off with an F150.....

You better reweigh your truck. 4800 is WAY to light. My 2wd reg cab SHORT bed 2wd lightning weights 4,400bs WITHOUT me in it
The the OP, I missed where it was just a reg cab gasser. It should weigh about 6500lbs. You would be safe with the steel wheels on THAT truck
My buddies F-250 7.5 CC SB 4x4 weighs 6560 with him inside of using scales on base.
Yeah, I just had mine on the scales last week CCSB 7250 with me in it and 1.5 tanks of fuel. I guess the diesel 2 extra tires/wheels and fiberglass fenders weigh about 700lbs
Thanks fellas. I'll let him know that if he doesn't plan on jumping it or anything, he might be okay.
Brad, can I get a link to some aluminum wheels for 10 bucks more than those steel wheels? Maybe I can get him to change his mind to get some of those, for safety's sake.
