CRS here, sorry, couldn't remember when it switched to a 6 speed, thought it was in 2010 for sure, but maybe not. Either way, the 5 speed works great for me and I have not heard of any problems with the Torqueshift coupled with the 3V V-10.
The V10 will be just fine even with 3.73 gears. I had a 2002 V10 and pulled my 5er 10,000 lbs up and down many moutain passes even 12-14% grades and it did it. Not the fastest but it worked. On flat or mostly flat ground it will be great.
I do agree that I would go to a 05 or newer to get the Tourque Shift trans. It is awesome. I have one in my 07 6.0 dsl. The V10 did not pull anything like my 6.0 and my V10 had a 5 star tuner, but it did very well.
You willl have alot more reliable truck and easier to maintain with the V10.
