Well, I decided to go with 3.73. With 29" tires, that will put me cruising about 2800 RPM at 65, should be totally fine. She goes under the knife today, I'll report back when she's back on the road!

Keep us posted.
Did you ever find out what ratio you currently have?

I finally found the vin tag in the glove box and found that the stock ratio was a 4.88, though I haven't been able to verify if what's in there now is stock. If it isn't the stock 4.88, I would be inclined to say it was swapped for something even lower, possibly in the 5's. I'll update as we progress.

Just got a PM from Outlaw56 asking about the gear situation, figured I'd post a response here since I wanted to get some input anyways.

Unfortunately, the guys at the shop tell me that the replacement parts (specifically the carrier) for new Dana 60's do not fit the original style Dana 60's, like what's on my '55, and that they'll have to special order a carrier/ring and pinion, possibly to be manufactured direct from Dana. Do any of you guys know anything about this and what would you do?

Guy at the shop is supposed to call me tomorrow with cost and timeframe. If either are out of control I'm probably going to consider junkyard diving for a full rear end.

Sorry Coyote, I was looking for response in a thread I started about this same thing. I never got any notification you had responded until I checked your pm. Hopefully I will be notified with any changes to this thread as they come in. So, the guy I talked to is Mike at extension 118 at 1-866-349-6801. The name of the vendor is: justdifferentials.com I told him I had a dana 60 with either 4.56 or 4.88 in 1956 F-250 stock stake bed. He said he could sell me the gears I needed and the install kit to give me a 373. Price was around $450 and have to find an installer locally. After I got that information (assuming I understood everything correctly and gave him the correct information) I read your thread that said these axels had two different size pumpkins. I had never heard that and Mike never mentioned it. If I understood correctly, you said I might need a different axel housing to fit a different size pumpkin than I have. My ultimate goal is to convert the axel from 4.56/4.88 to 373 and add a dual wheel adaptor to make a F-25 Flatbed with dualies. So far I have come up with one hurdle after the other.

Sounds like we're in about the same boat bud, except for the dually conversion.

I just figured a D60 is a D60, with the exception of the carrier break (3.31-4.10 and 4.56-7.17). It appears this might be why a lot of guys just swap out rear ends, rather than rebuilding the original.

Thanks Coyote, will keep an eye on the thread for more guideance...Im so out of the water on this one. I presently have two F-100 Im restoring and have a F-250 in the works that I want to convert to flatbed and dualies. Much bigger challenge than either of my F-100's. There is so much information here I tend to get lost and confused in all the options.

Hey hotstuff, I've been using an online converter to figure the best ratio/tire/tranny combo for me.

Engine RPM Calculator

Since changing the gears in the rear is turning out to be a big pain in the rear (pun intended), I'm back to considering a transmission swap. I currently have a C4, my upgrade option would be an AOD. I can get an AOD (in unknown condition) for 50 bucks from a friend, and have it rebuilt and installed fairly cheaply. At 65 MPH, with stock 4.88 and 29" tall tires, I'll be around around 2500 RPM. Pretty close to the original goal, and maybe easier/cheaper than swapping rear ends.

Any of you guys have input on running a 4.88 rear end with an AOD? Can that tranny handle that kind of torque?

Just considering other options, as I would really like to keep the 8-bolt (don't want to buy new wheels and tires)

I have found this website helpful in the past when searching for salvage parts. I lucked out and found locally a 3.73 Dana 60 out of a 68 F250 a couple years back with it.

Good Luck
