I am considering moving my springs under the diff of my '51 f-1. I was wonder what people who have done it did about the shock mount? Also, is it worth doing?
Yeah man, I was hoping some of the guys on here would have some good experience with this. I tried searching the forum for this but couldn't find anything.
There are other things that complicate an answer. Are you asking about the upper shock mount, or the one on the spring plate? Are you also going to a 9" for better gears? How much of a notch are you putting in the frame?
Most 9" have shock mounts on the axle tubes, that can be cut and re-welded where you need them. Naturally you'll need to measure the at-rest length of the shocks you need, add and subtract 3" at least to get the overall range.
The notching could effect the stock upper shock mount.
Just don't angle them any more than the already are. Reversing the axle on the springs will drop the rear significantly (the diameter of the axle) but will require quite a bit of additional work, it's not just an unbolt rebolt project. Mid Fifty sells short shocks for this type mod, I'd expect that their sister company Classic Haulers would have some similar.
