Cool Ceased engine

I have a 1972 f250 that I got from a guy that hadn't messed with it in two years and said it would turn over but never did start when he got it. All he did was put a new distributer on it. I brought it in on a trailer a couple weeks ago, did what I had to do to it got a battery, etc. It turned over 3 times really slow and acted like the battery was dead when it wasnt. I tried turning the crankshaft and everything, but it was definitly ceased up, so my friend came and we tide the truck to his backhoe and tried pulling it around in gear a little to try to get it turning over but at first it locked up all the wheels and now if you put it in gear it acts like its in neutral so I obviosly broke a gear or something serious.. anyways sorry to be wordy but I took all the plugs out and filled the cylinders with atf so how long should I let it sit like that and what else should I try if that doesnt get it to turn over?

ouch.
well- welcome to FTE.

that's a "damn the torpedoes" method of freeing up a seized engine.
i'd say soaking the rings in ATF for a day or two should be sufficient. like you said- at this point, you've likely messed up something else.

is it a manual or auto?

THIS IS A LONG SHOT!! I'm attempting to read into the text, "when you put it in gear it acts like its in neutral" Are you still dragging it, now the wheels are turning ? My take on it is you are pulling it in gear and now it rolls freely, no sense of any compression from engine bay.

If Correct:
(1) try to turn the crank now, free (yes)
(2) Pull dist cap, turn again, rotor spin ? (no) timing chain .

Reason, Top end locked (Cam, lifter, rocker, valve etc.. something was binding it up.

Crank wont turn, but in gear it rolls free.
Clutch/flexplate may be in pieces, & or as well as anything between that and the pumpkin/s.

Never force stuff

Might have broke the center out of the clutch disc?

Kinda moot point now.

To Rustywheel and Redman: Yep I definetly broke something else forcing it like that, its not a good idea but oh well.. Its a manual and I tried letting the Atf sit for a day and it wont do anything at all its almost like its my starter even though I replaced it. It doesnt click or anything. I know the engine's not free because I can't turn it by pushing on the fan or even putting a socket on the crankshaft. I'll take the distributer cap off and try all that and I guess see what happens.
Thank you

you may not get it loose-

instead of using a ratchet & socket on the crankshaft bolt, use a wrench.
that way you can rock it back-and-forth, instead of just one direction.

if that doesn't work- you're already on the verge of needing to pull it...may as well take the heads off and have a look at the cylinders.

Have to agree, it sure sounds like pulling it apart, at least the top end is going to explain alot. Probably find yourself hunting a running engine on craigslist and picking up a new clutch or ? Let us know what you find.

Yep I'll have too and I hope its the clutch and not something too serious. I was talking to a guy today and says he thinks he knows about a good 390 so I'll see what comes of that hopefully I can get it.
Thank you again
