After sanding the back of my hood light mounting plate and also the place on the hood where it attaches, the ground is still not good. What I found was that the hood lamp housing is not a single casting with the mounting plate. Rather, there are two tiny rivets that hold the housing to the plate. What I see is that there's significant rust between the housing and the plate. If I run a short wire from the side of the housing to the hood, light comes on. Almost like I'm gonna have to drill out those tiny rivets and replace with machine screws!
Any suggestions? The entire hood light housing and mouting plate is rusty...
Nice idea and excellent chemistry approach, but will it hurt the mercury switch and internal electrical components? I'm sorta thinking that switch shouldn't be dunked in water. Also, the place where the two things (bulb base and light bracket) may be unreachable by the solution. In otherwords, the solution may not be able to get into the area between bulb base and bracket. Not sure...
you could always just drill a small hole near the rivets and put a small sheetmetal screw in it. That will make a connection and not stick out like a sore thumb.
what he said will work though, if you are worried about the switch part, just suspend it so that is not in the solution.

It can reach.. chemicall, it will eventually reach the rust after dissolving whatever is closest to the anodes until all of the rust is gone.
In terms of the components, it only attacks rust. Isn't there a way to remove/disassemble the light prior to dunking?
