Ex won't start

Another puzzle for the brain trust...

2001 Ex V-10 4x4. Ran like a top yesterday. Turns over fine but not even a sputter today. Plenty of fuel & battery. Has spark. Tried starting fluid, but nothing. No codes. Checked fuses and relays in dash & under hood.

Fast forward an hour...

Went out and tried it again - fired up like nothing ever happened. Plowed snow for the better part of an hour, - ran like a champ again, smooth, no missing or stutters - parked it and shut it off. Tried to start it again within a minute or so and it would start, run rough & die. Tried a few more times with same results. Now it cranks fine but no start, no sputter. Gonna try a fuel filter tomorrow.

If it were the fuel pump, wouldn't it throw a code?

Thanks for any and all insight.

Did you check the relay inside the dash for the fuel pump? You'll need to pull the radio to get to it.

Great spot for a relay, huh? I'll check it out later today. Should be able to hear or feel it with the ignition on/off, right? You'd think it would throw a code if the pump or the relay were bad.

Forgive the ignorance, but I thought the relay for fuel pump was under the hood, drivers side... I know I read that in one of these fuel pump threads. I will try and find it. (added link below) Is there more than one relay?

I think for the later years, it is under the hood. Not sure. I've read it to be all over the place. At least on my '02, it's in the dash. Here is a link for it.

Pulled the radio and the dash cover and finally got to the relay. Couldn't hear or feel it clicking when I turned on the ignition. Swapped it out with the horn relay & same results. Horn still works tho. Happened to notice a label under the hood on the radiator support that there's a fuel pump shutoff switch in the passenger kick panel. Found it and it clicked when I pushed the button to reset it. Still won't start tho.

Starting to look like the fuel pump, but still gotta think that if it were the pump it would throw a code.

Does anyone know if that's the case?

Crawled underneath today and can't hear the fuel pump running with the ignition switch on. Looks like the wires are all on top of the tank, of course. I'd like to make sure there's juice to the pump before tearing the tank out. Does anyone know of a spot that's accessible to see if there's voltage to the pump ?

Finally got the beast pushed into the garage where it's warm. There's no power to or from the inertia switch Rechecked fuses & realys and all seem ok.

Scratching my head on this one tho. My manual shows a FP relay behind the radio on the pickup but not the ex. Can't find one on the ex schematic other the one under the hood in the junction box. There is a relay next to the turn signal relay but the wire colors don't match up with the schematic. Crawled around under the dash and not seeing another relay with the right color wires anywhere. Gotta be another one in there somewhere....Any ideas?
