hello all, i have a 75 hb that i am trying to find out what front axle i have... the code on the door reads B4P, in the book i have this says dana 60. Am i decoding this correctly? i cant see it on the axle itself, but everything else on the truck is original, so i am assuming that what the tag reads is correct.
Confusion is this: The P code in my 75 book says Dana 60 front w/ power steering. The P code on fordification website says Dana 60 front w/ power steering. You replied that the P code = Dana 44. Therefore I am confused..I am not sure which is correct..Is there anything visual I could check (other than the stamp I cant see) for verification?? thx.

Your truck is a '75 therefore the "P" code denotes a D44 (heavy duty)
Were your truck a '76 the "P" code would denote a D60 (low pinion)
If your '75 came equipped with a D60 you would have an "R" code.
I have a door tag that clearly says I have a D60 w/power steering on my 75 250 but it's clearly a HD D44. Can't explain it either and don't think someone swapped in a D44 and connected all the steering components, but it's the reality for me. I know it's a HD D44 because of the stamp and the bolt size on the diff.
There's an old thread on this site with key words "Dan" and D60" and "axle" and "HD44" to check out. Pics and other goodies.
thx to all of you. i will check the bolt sizes & see what i have. I was assuming it was a 44 until i checked the door code. Whatver it is, i appreciate the help.

If your truck is a regular cab and the front axle is original it is a Dana 44...Ford didn't put a Dana 60 front in a regular cab truck until 1978. Look at front side of passenger side axle tube near differential housing for a 6 digit number starting with a 6- this will identify the axle in great detail.

The Dana 60 ID tag number is stamped on an approx 2" x 1/2" metal plate that is bolted (2 bolts) to the housing, adjacent to the inspection cover on both front driving and rear axles.
So, it will be on the right (passenger) side, adjacent to the inspection cover on front driving axles. On the left (drivers) side adjacent to the inspection cover on rear axles.
The number begins with a 6 followed by either 6 or 7 numbers.
The Ford ID tag is located under one of the bolts that retains the inspection cover to the housing. Many of these tags are missing today.
