decoding Door tag/axle question
hello all, i have a 75 hb that i am trying to find out what front axle i have... the code on the door reads B4P, in the book i have this says dana 60. Am i decoding this correctly? i cant see it on the axle itself, but everything else on the truck is original, so i am assuming that what the tag reads is correct.

Confusion is this: The P code in my 75 book says Dana 60 front w/ power steering. The P code on fordification website says Dana 60 front w/ power steering. You replied that the P code = Dana 44. Therefore I am confused..I am not sure which is correct..Is there anything visual I could check (other than the stamp I cant see) for verification?? thx.

Were your truck a '76 the "P" code would denote a D60 (low pinion)
If your '75 came equipped with a D60 you would have an "R" code.

I have a door tag that clearly says I have a D60 w/power steering on my 75 250 but it's clearly a HD D44. Can't explain it either and don't think someone swapped in a D44 and connected all the steering components, but it's the reality for me. I know it's a HD D44 because of the stamp and the bolt size on the diff.
There's an old thread on this site with key words "Dan" and D60" and "axle" and "HD44" to check out. Pics and other goodies.
EDIT: Found it here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...44-or-d60.html

Both you guys have '75's (as do i) we all three have the B4P axle code
B4 = limited slip D60 rear
P = Dana 44HD front
If you're getting your info from the 1975 Truck Shop Manual (or Fordification) the D60 "P" code is a typo, the correct codes for '75 are as follows...
"Q" 3,000lb D44
"P" 3,500lb D44HD
"R" 3,800lb D60
B4 = limited slip D60 rear
P = Dana 44HD front

Info on Fordification is from the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, available on a CD from hipoparts.com
This same CD catalog is being used by Fordification, montana highboy, mikeo0o0o0, jermafenser.
This CD catalog was scanned from an early edition, has errors and omissions.
The alternative would be an original loose leaf paper catalog (if you can find one), or microfiche, which is what I'm using.

If your truck is a regular cab and the front axle is original it is a Dana 44...Ford didn't put a Dana 60 front in a regular cab truck until 1978. Look at front side of passenger side axle tube near differential housing for a 6 digit number starting with a 6- this will identify the axle in great detail.
So, it will be on the right (passenger) side, adjacent to the inspection cover on front driving axles. On the left (drivers) side adjacent to the inspection cover on rear axles.
The number begins with a 6 followed by either 6 or 7 numbers.
The Ford ID tag is located under one of the bolts that retains the inspection cover to the housing. Many of these tags are missing today.
