Oil change interval

I have 9000 miles on my truck and still no oil change message. I changed it at 3000 and again at 7000 but I don't think the truck would know that. Is that normal?

If your vehicle is new then I would change your oil based on the interval requirements in your owners manual that way you don't void out your warranty. Keep it mind that synthetic oil last a lot longer then regular motor oil and can last anywhere between 7,500 - 15,000 miles. It all depends on how you drive your vehicle. But sooner is better. Get back to me on what your owners manual says though.

Did you get it done the first two times at the dealer? If so maybe they reset the computer and that would explain why you haven't seen anything. Without any reset you should get the message at around 7000 miles.

If you didn't reset the IOLM, it doesn't know you changed the oil and it should have alerted by now.
That's interesting.
I have forgotten to reset it a few times and it has alerted between 6,900 and 7,200 in the past.

I changed the oil & filter both times (Rotella T6) and didn't reset the IOLM (there never was message to cause me to reset it).

I'm at 7400 miles now and still have not had an oil change alert. I plan on going ahead and changing it next week and toping off the DEF tank.

Perfect timing. This morning the check engine symbol is on. But when I go to Information it says Oil Life "OK". I can't even find out why the light is on.

Nope, it's the Service Engine Soon symbol. I think that's emissions related. Still nothing about an oil change. I'll watch it for a few days as the book recommends.

IIRC, part of the 'when to change' calculation is an opacity test, so it is more than just miles for changes...

driving style, driving conditions, towing, loaded, unloaded, all play into it...

http://owner.ford.com/servlet/Conten...=1239636411265

How the intelligent oil life monitor (IOLM) determines remaining oil life

This advanced new feature measures several key inputs, including:

Driving habits (such as towing and workload)
Hours in operation and at idle
Oil and coolant temperature
Engine speed and torque
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) cleaning cycles

Messages displayed on the oil life monitor

You’ll find a display in your instrument cluster’s message center that will notify you of oil change intervals by displaying ENGINE OIL CHANGE SOON or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED. The system will also indicate when fuel filters need maintenance, or if fuel pressure is low.*

There you go... So changing the oil early does affect when it will display the "Change Oil Soon" message.

It might be outdated but I still believe that the first oil change interval might be the most important one for the life of the engine.

I agree on the first change, but ford disagrees on the oil change msg
that is when the most wear is put on a new engine

BUT - my dealer said wait until it tells you(since I have the maint pkg),
so I did my first @ about 7500 and haven't gotten a message to change it since... (now @ about 16k - 5k of it towing)
Imagine I'll have to this summer - have a few rv trips planned...

oh, and I did more research to find the following - must be the Audi that has the opacity not the ford:

How the IOLM works

The IOLM does not use oil quality sensors – it is entirely software-based and uses actual engine operating conditions to calculate the oil change interval by using an algorithm.
his means the system must be reset after an oil change. Not doing so will result in a premature OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message.

The frequency of oil changes

Depending on driving conditions, oil change intervals are approximately:

Up to 10,000 miles - Normal commuting with highway driving
5,000 – 7,500 miles - Trailer tow/high-load driving
3,000 – 5,000 miles - Short trip usage, extreme cold or hot temperature

NOTE: Actual mileage will depend on your specific driving conditions.

Under normal conditions, you will get an OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message at up to 1 year, or 10,000 miles from the previous oil change.

And very telling quote you have in your signature line - I like it !

Yes, Ford says follow the IOLM or 1 year, whichever comes first.

If older oil increases EOT then I suppose it could slightly modify the IOLM alert cycle by changing it early and having slightly cooler temps.

However, the IOLM still has no idea you changed your oil and the regen cycles, temps, hours, miles, etc. are still adding up on what the truck thinks is the same oil.

Does the truck have some way to keep track of the date?

I'm curious because it looks like I'm going to put 5-6k miles a year on it.

I know for most all vehicles an annual change is recommended if you aren't hitting the mileage for a change.

I don't know how my XLT truck would know the date.
Basic radio, no SYNC, etc..
Pulling the batteries resets the transmission learning tables so I would image it would reset any date/time settings if it existed, which we would have to correct.
