If I were you I would look into a 4.375" crank. You might as well go big.

Looked the post over and typical crap. Folks suggesting a cam and pistons and this and that "before asking what's it in, gears, tires, GVW, usage .. some of it is spot on. The best of it was, build the short block the best you can. My advice is, build a basic 390 SB the best you can on a budget to get the experience. You might be surprised what a well built 390 SB will do "with a basic head port job topping it off" and "the correct carb, tuning" RUN IN JUST ABOUT ANY DAMN THING. If you like it, pick up a builder an take your time on a crazy *** build, and it easy on the 390 till it's done. Unload the 390 and install the bigger build. Or leave the 390 on a skid in case you screw up the $$ BUILD

Ok guys I'm going to make this build a little cheaper because I'm not getting the loads I'm needing to fund this project. I need to build an engine because I need to freshen up the engine that is in my truck. So this is my 3rd pats list.

Carburetor ----- Holley 750 or Edelbrock 650 ----- $299 or $316
Intake ----- Edelbrock ----- $324.99
Pistons ----- KB Hypertonic ----- $169.99
Piston Rings ----- Sealed Power ----- $64.39
Main Bearings ----- King Engine ----- $55.95
Rod Bearings ----- King Engine ----- $34.95
Cam & Lifters ----- Voodoo by Lunati ----- $216.85 .503/.524 Lift is this good????
Cam Bearings ----- King Engine ----- $29.95
Headers ----- Mad Dog Headers ----- $489.99
Gasket Kit ----- Sealed Power ----- $63.95
Oil Pump ----- Sealed Power ----- $34.99
Distributor ----- PerTronix HEI ----- $245.95
Spark Plug Wires ----- Moroso ----- $69.95

What heads are you running? I'd go with a Performer RPM Intake.

As far as the carb goes, I'm running a 500 Carter (same as an Edelbrock, just made in '65) on my 416.

I'll run stock heads for now until I have the $$$ to upgrade to edelbrock heads. Would 750 CFM's be too big for this application??

What are the head numbers? I'll let someone else learn you about carbs.

If looking to save money, those headers are very expensive, you could trim some there, Summit would have a set for $150.
Also, a Duraspark ignition module and distributor would be $125 or less.

The lift looks ok on that cam, but we dunno the duration.

Yea but I want fender-well headers. That is the only company that makes fender-wells for the 390.
