Gooseneck Trailers

I'm looking at picking up a gooseneck trailer. I've got a 15k budget and would like to get the most bang for my buck. I am trying to get at least a 8.5x30 trailer. I have started reading reviews about certain companies and they are so bad that the BBB won't even accredit them. So if you have some experience with goosers, would mind letting me know where you got it from? I've got a '11 f-250 supercab 4x4 3.73 gears that I am going to be hauling it with. So weight wise I'd like to stick to tandem 7k axles or triple 5.2k axles.

Thanks

Tandem 7K's with a 30' trailer isn't going to leave you with much to haul. Trailer brand are pretty regional and have no idea where you are located. We use Titan, have a 24' tandem dually. Should be able to find all kinds of name brand brand new for well under $15K. Looks like brand new Titan 30' tandems duals are in the $10K range.

Just from experience, I'd go with heavier dually tandem axles rather than single wheel triples. One of the useful features of a goose is being able to make some extremely tight swings, and with triple axles there is always that one set of tires that REALLY gets abused. I have triple 7s on mine and cringe when I'm loaded heavy and have to watch them tires practically scrubbing themselves off the rims. Not near as much of an issue when you only have two axles.

As galaxie said, 7k duals or even the triple 5ks, aren't going to leave you with much hauling weight. The trailer itself is going to be running probably 5K +/-, and that will be before you start adding stuff like chains, binders, etc. I added a basket to the front of mine to hold chains, binders, straps, 4x4 blocks, rubber wheel chocks, axle straps, blah blah.. AND added a deep cycle battery and box to run the 10k winch installed at the front of the deck for coaxing non-running wheeled stuff up the ramps.

Dead weight adds up.

I found a triple 7000 lb axle 40' GN trailer on ebay that was just 15 miles from home. The best part is that it was just ten years old, in great shape, full of upgrades, and under $10K.
Deals are out there. I have no complaints with the axle configuration. I have friends that I race with that are envious of my axles as they are constantly have issues with bearings and tire blow outs.
My only complaint is that the trailer is heavy and long. I thought my trailer was about 5000 lbs empty. WRONG!!! Try 10,000 lbs. If I had found one that was 32-36' with the same axles at the same price I would have bought it instead. I have cabinets in mine that take up about 8 feet of space and I can only fit one car...and maybe a smart car/golf cart if I had one.

I found what I hope to buy. I am planning on moving to UT after I get back from Afghanistan, instead of having a rent bill every month, I decided on a living quarters/toy hauler trailer while I go to school. Location means nothing to me as I am will to drive anywhere in the country to pick it up. So now I hope the dealership still has the trailer I am interested in. So next question, anyone have any experience with Overland Express gooseneck trailers? Or Forest River trailers? The overland is 36' and the Forest River is 38'. Anyhow, thanks for your advice. I really appreciate it.

In my experience pretty much all travel trailers have pretty low build quality( until you get in to the BIG money stuff), as long as you go in to it knowing/expecting that they are alot of fun. I have a 14 year old fleetwood 5th wheel with a goose neck adapter. I have made so many upgrades/ modification to bring it up to more acceptable standards that I am having a hard time letting it go to upgrade to something bigger.

All that being said if I was a single guy without kids I would 100% be living in an RV full time. Just set your expectation really low and be pleasently suprised when everything isn't totally crap......of course coming from Afghanistan it will be the fricking ritz. Your own crapper, kitchen, fridge, a queen size bed.

Thought you were talking about goose neck flatbed trailers, not 5th wheels. Nvm then, axles on 5th wheels are totally different animal.

I started out looking for a enclosed gooseneck I could pull with my 250. Then that turned into trying to find an enclosed gooseneck with living quarters for when I leave Afghanistan and go back to school. Sorry about the confusion.

And as far as having my own crapper, shower and carpet. I can't wait. I love being single with no kids. I'm going into my fourth year over here. 3 as army, and first as a contractor.

Thank you for your service. I did two years in RC East (6 months in Kabul, 1.5 years at FOB Fenty) as a contractor.
