Another new problem...

So, I have been chasing down the "strange rolling" noise. My last attempt was to drop the drive shaft to see if it was the carrier bearing or rear u-joints. The sound was still there, so I re-installed the driveshaft. But, before I re-installed the driveshaft, I went ahead and re-greased the splines.

I went to move the truck today and noticed that when I come to a stop, right before I stop, I feel a slight "clunk". I have read that this clunk sometimes comes from lack of grease in the splines. But, I just did that.

I also recently just replaced my ball joints. Could I have done something wrong in the install with those to cause this?

Thanks,

Devin

Did you use the blue ford PTFE grease?

No, I used a moly-based wheel grease. I will try some of the other stuff.

I vaguely remember you writing about this...and I don't remember all the replies. How are your slide pins on your brakes? If you have only one hanging up, you get a similar noise to what I think you are describing. My family owns two of these, and we have six at work. The rolling growl is familiar, and usually turns into a vibration.

I have checked, cleaned, and regreased all of the slide pins. You said that the rolling growl turns into a vibration - are you talking about sticking slide pins causing this noise?

By chance when you greased the pins you didnt use too much grease did you? If you use to much grease the pin will vaporlock in the caliper bracket causing the pads to drag, I ususally have to mess around wiping a little grease at a time off my pins until I can slide them in and they don't pop halfway out on their own.

It is possible. I didn't get a chance to dive into the truck this weekend. Wanted to spend some time with the family. Maybe next weekend. Thanks for all of the ideas. I will get back with updates with what I find.

The PTFE ford grease is specifically formulated by ford to correct this issue. Using axle grease will work for a short time. I bought it in a pint can. I had a similar issue on my excursion. I used axle grease which was good for about a month then the clunking and noise returned. I used the XG8 and had no issues in 15,000 miles!

Thanks - that's vastly cheaper than the typical dealership, right? I thought that stuff was $26/tube or some nonsense. I have had poor/uneven results on 2 trucks using regular moly chassis grease on the driveshaft splines.
