need help fixing oil leak

I replaced my waterpump a week ago and in the process of removing the waterpump I broke the gasket on the gear cover/ waterpump backing plate not sure what it is called. When I removed the plate it tore the gasket for the oil pan on the "U" shaped part under the crank shaft. I tried to use RTV to seal the oilpan to the plate "FAIL". I was hoping someone has an idea to solve this issue without pulling the engine. I can not lift te engine at all with out removing the turbo so at that point I might as well pull the engine. I was thinking that maybe i could drop the oil pan, clean really well and slip the gasket up around it. the problem thit that is that there is only an inch under the front in between the oil pan and the crossmember. The other option is to remove the waer pump and backing plate to access the "U" shaped piece to try again to make a gasket for that front bit of the oil pan. Any ideas would be appreciated

Had the same issue not too long ago on a 400. You done need to drop the pan, but it would make it easier if you can. Loosen all the oil pan bolts or remove, the more room the better. If the timing chain cover isnt leaking where it seals to the block, you shouldnt have to remove it. Basically you want to silicone the whole oil pan, they came from the factory without a gasket. When i had mine off i put a gasket on it, and ever since ive had problems with the oil pan bolts loosening on me and the pan leaking.

Anyway, i would drop / pull the pan, clean the block and pan and silicone everything and reassemble. Easy enough to say, alot less fun to do.

A good tip with silcone is clean with brake clean, shoot it in, then snug down till it starts to ooze out, then let it dry-cure completely. Then torque. They also have this stuff called The Right Stuff, which is like partially cured silicone. It's easier to work with, but expensive. The way the factory can get away with using silicone instead of gaskets is because when they put something together it's perfectly clean, then it sits for awhile with no fluids in it till the silicone is completely cured.
