So I was at the parts store the other day to price out a new clutch for my truck. The guy asked me what was in it so I said 360, but then I told him i would be putting a 390 in soon. He said something about the 390 using a 12"? clutch and the 360 using an 11"? Just wondering what the deal is here and also will the flywheel off my 360 work on my rebuilt 390?
The way I understand it, the flywheel will work with both size clutch disks/pressure plates. I went ahead and bought a new flywheel as mine had hundreds of heat cracks in it.
A word of warning to ya. Some of the chain auto parts stores have the wrong clutch part number loaded in their data base. I learned the hard way. After returning 2 clutch kits back due to a "fitting" problem I had them look the number up in the book. Sure enough the data base has one number (for a 400M engine) and the book had the correct number. Sure caused me a whole lot of grief!!!!!!!!!
I would install a diaphram type clutch regardless of the size. They take less effort to push in and seem to be less prone to chatter. I won't use the stock type after using the diaphram type.
Thanks Lee, one thing about this local store anyways is they still use the books to look up the part, then the computer to see if it's in stock
Mike,
As for the diaphram type clutch that would be a centerforce or something similar right? How much more than just a replacement are they? I'm hoping to do a 5 speed swap someday and I dont know what clutch I will need then.
Hi Jay, you can get a diaphram type replacement for the same price as a stock type. I buy mine from a clutch shop. They resurface the flywheel for free.
