91 explorer with charging problems

I have a 91 explorer that is having a strange problem. The charging guage is running on the very low end (around the N). I had the charging system checked and the system was not charging. I replaced the alterneator, cleaned the battery terminals and the problem persists. I have checked the fuses and they all seem to be fine.

The problem will go away at times as if there is something loose. I have noticed that when the battery light comes on when I start the car, everything will work fine. If the battery light does not come on when the car is started I have the charging problem.

I've checked the cables and they seem to be fine.

Have you traced the wiring down to the starter? Sometimes this wiring can get frayed and ground out against adjacent metal.

Just another idea for something easy to check.

Thanks for all the help. I found that the problem was that hte alternator I bought was bad out of the box. Once that was replaced everything is working fine.
