I have 89 idi 5speed was driving it and started not wanting to idle and seemed to be having power issues after a whole day of non stop pto work. i shut down went had dinner came out out anddidnt want to start (always starts). So i shut off gp and gave it a squirt of either and it started but it didnt idle well. I drove home and it died on the road in front of my home so i coasted into the drive way and popped the clutch and it wouldnt start. After i came to a rolling stop i tried to restart no luck. Sooo i bought a new lift pump (transcold) and new hose from the tank to lift pump and pump to w/s and to ip. My pump is a year old and did return lines at same time. Truck has no tank selector. I Cant get this too fire back up at all i have very little fuel going to injectors and some are not getting any. I have one item that im not sure about how to check and that is the piece is where the return line goes into its got a small rubber piece in it but i can see thru it. I thought this piece was a cheack valve. I made sure my pump is spinning. Any info would be helpful as i see many have issues with air but still get it running. I ve read tons for the last two weak and most dont seem to quit like this thanks for your help...
Sounds to me like youre not getting fuel somewhere, or not enough to fire at any rate. Check the schrader valve on the fuel filter head. Should have 5-7psi and something like 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of cranking. Its been my experience that as long as theres fuel there it will fire, however especially e-pumps can get weak and will move fuel but not enough pressure or visa versa. If that checks good, ensure your fuel shutoff solenoid is working. It should click audibly when you connect / disconnect the wire on the IP with the key on. However im not sure that just because it clicks means its working correctly.
Well i did the tank pick up tube mod when i put a new tank in 4/5 monthes ago and its 3/4 of a tank. When it quit I took out the old mech lift pump and put in the new transcold lift pump, is pumping like a champ. i did a pressure check and i have 5/6 lbs with that pump. I put i new filter on when it quit and i got that at the same time i did the electric transcold pump. I also have done the check oF the fss. Infact that was what i was thinking it was, i even pulled the cover to make sure it is working, its alot stronger than you think it is watch your fingers . Im going to order a new return line kit and new olives even tho mine is only about 8-9 months old. Ive been thru all the theads here my last thought is injection pump. I just dont seam to find any post saying ip quit heres what it did. They just say it was time for a new one mine was bad. Thanx guys any other thoughts or items i may be overlooking?
Btw its acts just like it was running out of fuel. I also checked the screen insind the injection pump as a last thing i can think of and it was very clean.
For some reason i was thinking he couldnt get it to fire even when cold. Where did you get your pump considering its only 1yr old..? I dunno what its like where youre at, but around here IDIs are getting pretty plentiful at the JY and they only charge $22 for one at the two i go to. Might drop the 20 and grab one to verify yours is toast. Or you could let it cool see if it will fire, and when its warm and wont fire try the water on the IP trick.
Correct it wont fire cold and until the day it quit it never gave me starting issues cold or hot. I thought the pump going bad gave you symtoms first<------- not sure if that is true ??? The pump came from some shop in Penn, On the road repair. Im in nw ohio and dont remenber who or where lol I can say i didnt see anything in the ip filter or under the fss cap. Can i run my transcold pump to the ip for testing to see if maybe i have a bad w/s housing or does it have to be hooked up for the return line?
just for the halibut, pull the plate off the front cover and see if the bolts are still in the injection pump gear.
the pump may still be good, just not turning.
ok. i was just wondering as you said the pump was replaced by some unknown on the side of the road.
thought that just maybe the bolts were put in loose and fell out.
have you disconnected a line at an injector to see if you have fuel coming out of the pump?
it sounds like the pump crapped out though.
I have very little fuel comming out of the lines and several have no fuel. The amount of fuel is almost nothing wont even run down the injector. I took off the caps today and the orings and caps looked in good shape. I made a rig to pressurise the caps and apply air to them to check if i have a crack and they all passed. So as soon as my return line kit shows up im going to install new caps, lines , and orings. Once those r installed im going to run my fuel str8t to the ip and if that doesnt work in taking the pump out. I tried to get a used ip today and wow there exspensive here if the local yards even had any.
Well i got all new hoses from tank, all the way to return line kit, new olives, and new transcold lift pump installed. It still wont start so i bypassed my w/s and still nothing. I removed gps to make priming ip ezr. It still didnt bleed or prime. I took my pump back off and guess what......i cant spin it a total revolution, it hangs up and get really hard to turn. Wish i would have done that the first time i took it off lol. So thanx for the replies guys and ill give you an update when i get my pump ordered.
