ok im new 2 the forum,i just bought a 87 b2 from a guy who said he parked it and it wouldnt start.after getting it home i tryed to roll start it by putiing it in gear and letting out on the clutch.it is definitly locked up so my question is what causes one to lock up and what needs to be done as far as rebuilding it.i dont have much info at all about the truck but the oil looks ok,antifreeze looks clean and it even has a sunroof??? i didnt know ford put sunroofs in bronco 2's . 1987 bronco2 2.9v6 5speed manuel, eddiebower model with sunroof.
Hello and welcome to FTE.
The engine could be locked up because of a bad bearing on the crankshaft or a rod bearing. Could also be a broken crankshaft or rod. In either case the engine would need to be rebuilt and some parts replaced. Rebuilding the engine involves tearing it down and reconditioning the crank and rods and block if they are useable. You would need to replace the pistons, rings, rod & crank bearings and freeze plugs and all gaskets. Would also be a good time to recondition the heads. Find a good automotive machine shop that can recondition the block, crank, rods and heads for estimates. Find a shop that is recommended by others that have had good results from them. At the point you're at, some people swap in a 5.0 V8 with a tranny that can handle the V8, so there are other options. Depends on what you want to do with your B2.
thanks for getting back with me on my question.well i have a 302 and cummins 4bt to choose from.unfortunatly a guy offered to buy it from me this a.m. so i made him put his money where his mouth was.he said it was the 1st b2 he has ever seen with a sunroof.my 1st as well.do u know if that was a popular option or not .thanks again for taking the time to reply.
I had 1 or 2 of them with sunroofs. I have had an 89, 84, and now have an 87. My 87 does not have one. My 84 did have one and I can't remember weather my 89 did or not.
You could pull the spark plugs and squirt some ATF, Kroil, PB Blaster, or some other penetrating oil into the spark plug holes. Let it soak over night. Squirt in some more and use a breaker bar to rock the engine to loosen the stuck rings. If the rod or main bearings are locked this won't help at all. If rust was bad enough to lock the rings then there is a good chance the cylinders are going to need at least a good honing.
Rebuild, replace, or since you have an offer, sell.
I did this to an old Chevy V6 just so I could drive it out of a back yard where it had sat for 2 years. Used Kroil and ATF and it broke free very easily.

thanks for your reply as well,i sold the b2 with the suspect engine and am going to pickup a running and driving b2 today for what i sold the locked one for,it doesnt have a sunroof but i never saw much use in one anyway.
