I've been having some issues with the trans in my truck. Since I got it a couple months back, it's been popping out of reverse, and just a couple days ago it started popping out of second and third. I've noticed that when I'm coasting to a turn from about 50, when I put the trans in second gear for starting up a hill (clutch is in), there is resistance and what sounds like a whining noise that pitches down and quiets as I slow down.
I also noticed, that when coasting into town at about 35mph with the clutch in, I can't put the trans in 1st gear. I get resistance, and if I push up on the shift arm to try and get it in gear, I get a loud whining sound, and the truck starts to slow down a bit (but rpm's don't change).
I have to wonder about how you've been treating this transmission.
Why are you trying to shift into 1st when you're going 35mph?? I'd be in 5th at that speed, maybe 4th if I'm towing (3.55 gears).
I knew that was going to come across wrong. When I'm heading down this particular road into town, it goes from 50 to 35 to 25, and it's a small grade downhill. As long as I'm doing about 40ish when I hit the 35 zone, I can coast into town and the first stop sign. So what I do, is shift into neutral and keep the clutch pedal in because I've got a front main bearing problem. Usually when it starts to go back uphill near the sign, I shift into 3rd and go on my merry way at 25 mph. The other day, I was thinking about how I get resistance and noise when moving into second (with the clutch in) from 50 while prepping for a turn. So I wondered if I had the same issue at a lower speed. Second wasn't as bad as when coasting at 50, so I wondered about first. It's not like I'm trying to shift into first at 35. I'm not that dumb. Just trying to put the lever in that position didn't work.
Sorry but I really don't understand what you're saying.
If you're "putting the lever in that position" you are shifting. It doesn't matter if the clutch is in, or the clutch is out. The driveshaft is turning the transmission at whatever the ground speed is.
Resistance and noise when shifting into second at 50 is your transmission saying thats way too fast.
I think you need to get the transmission rebuilt, and read the chart in the manual that tells you recommended shift speeds and learn to follow them before you wreck the transmission again. I don't want to come across as an ***, but this is a truck with a truck transmission. Its not a race car with a fancy high speed transmission.
I'm new to manuals, and I just thought that as long as the clutch is in, and the trans is disengaged from the engine, you could move the lever to whichever position, and have no issues as long as the clutch stays in.
I already have the front main bearing going out, so before I buy and install a repair kit for that I wanted to figure out if there was anything else wrong. A full rebuild at the local shop is 1200, which is more than paid for the truck. So iit's either that or find a low miles used trans.
