OK, on my 74 F100, one of my reverse light sockets doesn't have a ground tab. It has rusted. the other looks ok, but when I put the truck in reverse, a good known bulb does not light (even when ignition on). Pretty sure truck doesn't have to be started, but maybe it does?
Is there an aftermarket light socket for the backup lamp?
What switch, for a C6 automatic, controls the B/U lamp? Thinking it may be part of the safety neutral swtich on the steering column?
I thought the reverse light socket was just a standard 1156 socket, but I know some of the early dentsides had a different style setup in the back. Mike or ND would know for sure.
The reverse light switch should be part of the neutral safety switch, mounted at the bottom of the column. Later years had the switch on the transmission itself.
Early '74s with the metal housing have the socket as an integral part of the body and aren't replaceable. Mid-year they changed to the plastic housing with a twist in socket.

yeah, mine's a late year '74 (June mfr. date). so i do have the twist in socket. I see Dorman 85989 for the tail light/brake light/turn signal piece for the 1157, but what's the socket for the 1156?
How about the neutral safety switch on the column - do these typically go bad and lose their 'back up light switch' connection?
my 74 was right on top of the column. you can unplug it and test with a jumper wire, it looks like a trailer wire plug. if the truck is starting fine you should be allright there. as far as the bulb socket, yes it can be replaced. some other things to try is the unscrew the ground wire behind the taillight assembly where its screwed to the bedpost and clean that connection really good, maybe replace the eyelet, too. should technically be fine if your blinkers and taillights are funtioning.
a replacement socket should be available at a parts store like oreilly or vatozone for around 6.99ish. check out what they have and see if it will work. the important thing to look at is the tabs where the socket fits into the light housing and turns in. the package will say its for an 1156 or 1040 style single contact bulb. if you go ahead and use some dielectric grease it will keep it from rusting on ya again.

thanks guys.
Same taillamps/sockets: 1974 F100/350 Stylesides from serial number T80,001 / 1975/79 F100/350 Stylesides / 1975/91 Econoline / 1978/79 Bronco.
C7TZ-7A247-A .. NSS (Motorcraft SW600) / Obsolete ~ Available from autoparts stores / 1967/77 F100/350 all A/T's & 1973/77 Bronco (C4).
how about the reverse (backup) light socket? anyone have a part number for that?
D4TZ-15536-A .. Backup Lamp Socket w/pigtailed wiring. Same applications as taillamps.
Find a 1975/91 Econoline, get the lamps/sockets from it. 1975/77's have round headlamps, 1978/91's have rectangular headlamps. Otherwise all 1975/91's look pretty much the same.
Sounds good - i found one on ebay for $10, NOS, a Ford part. I can't seem to find what everyone keeps saying is available at Autozone or O'reilly's - an aftermarket brand...
