I'm looking at buying a 05 E250 but its got 300k the van is a one owner fleet only used for courier, very clean i mean very clean, just Hesitant on pulling trigger.motor and tranny strong she shifts good just hesitant on miles.Any sug?
while you hear stories of some going high (I personally own a 450k example) 300 is very high milage for a vehicle with a questionable history. Expect to have to replace brakes, bearings, BALL JOINTS, rear axle seals, and do a diff/pinion job on it at least. The springs and shocks will be shot if not replaced prior, and the engine/trans could be reaching the end of their lives. This truck would probably be fine for puttering around town, especially if its a solid price (2k or less). I wouldn't go cross country in it without going over her with a fine toothed comb.
For me it would come down to the mainteance history or more specifically oil and transmission fluid changes. Engine and the tranny are the big ticket items - if they've been regularly maintained the high miles wouldn't bother me, if the price is right.
All the pheripheral stuff like brakes and suspension are regular wear items that don't cost that much and wouldn't keep me form buying a high mileage van, maybe give you some negotiation room.
I'm a delivery driver myself and from my experienece it's actually good for the engine to be constantly running and at working temp. Less cold starts too. This was based on used oil analysis.
My '03 E350 has 265K. I bought it as a repo off the eBay with 160K and don't have any regrets.
Rebuilding a rear diff can cost as much as a junkyard transmission. ~450 bucks in bearings, seals, and gear/pinion and that's if you do the work yourself. Far more if you have damaged axles on a semi-float rearend.
Having bought two nice E250's with "high miles" I've had nothing but good luck with them. '00 had 203K miles, my '03 had 163K miles but each have been well maintained over their lives. The first test drive tends to reveal so much; trans shifting, suspension feel, brakes, etc etc. Since you've never driven that vehicle before you might be a bit quicker to notice something amiss that a regular driver would not simply because wear might slowly grow and almost forgotten.
300K miles regardless how well maintained is a lot, especially when you'd be assuming the risk of something major breaking. The price would have to be very very right for me to jump into that deal unless I knew the owners very well. Then again as already mentioned that many miles if mostly over the road tend to be a bit easier on a vehicle for all the reasons stated.
New motor would run about $5K if you farmed it out (Ford motor), trans at least $2K (rebuilt/exchange, farmed out)---just a few costs to consider.
The dude wants $3800 its clean not in the sense he cleaned it its show room clean it even smells new. No tears the back is spotless she runs really good , I'm just weary of the miles. Don't know if I could pull the trigger.
I'd suggest checking out the rear floor under any mat or floor installed. The E-Series are notorious for surface rusting of the entire floor due the OEM mats absorbing mositure. Sadly it doesn't take a lot of time for it to begin forming.
