To start off i have a 2000 F350 7.3 that has a 6 position tuner with tw tunes(stock, warm up, 80 eco, 120, 140, and race), gauges(boost, exhaust, trans), 4in turbo back exhaust, 2.5in lift kit, and 35in tires on the truck from when i bought it. The truck had a brand new transmission put in bout 6,000 miles before it and today just left me stranded. The truck never showed any signs of having a transmission issue, the fluid full and not smelling, shifting fine. Today i was driving down the road, the truck seemed like it shifted hard then nothing it all. The gauges read normal, the linkage looked intact. It doesn't matter what i try to shift it into, its just like neutral. I was able to have a buddy bring it to his shop before i had to run out for a meeting, but any ideas of what it could be? There are no leaks, fluid was still bright red with no burnt smell. Could the transmission really be toast just like that? I also posted this in the 7.3 section, but feel like this will reach more people here.
Thanks in advance.
What would be the best way to check that? I'm new to diesels and anything having to do with transmissions. I think im also going to double check the transfer case tomorrow when i see it.
The first thing everybody says is the torque converter. Why? Is that the only part most people can identify? Usually when a torque converter fails performance drops WAY off for along time before it won't move any longer.
Since it is a 4x4 the first thing to check is the transfer case. With the trans in park can you roll the truck, or does park keep the truck from moving? If it will roll then the transfer case is the problem. If it holds in park the transfer case is fine.
A sudden failure is usually a shaft breaking, or splines stripping, or the pump failing. No matter if it is one of these of the torque converter then result is the same. The trans has to come out and get torn down.
Removing the pan and checking to see if the filter is in place wouldn't be a bad idea, either.
