I'm pretty happy with the Edelbrock I've got on my truck. They're easy to tune, plentiful, and cheap.
The only prob I had with the Eddy was when one of my mix screws stripped and popped out. But E. is right down the road from me, and they rebuilt it free. However, I've never seen the Eddy mentioned in the same sentence with 'good mpg.'
X2 with the Autolite 4100, 1.08 venturi!! And most people don't realize that there were two major calibration diffs with the 1.08's: big block and small block. You have to run the #'s on the toe of carb to determine which engine they are calibrated for. And no, you can't just jet them down. The difference is the boosters and air bleeds, which determine flow.
Amazing that a 45+ year old carb can fetch that price. And once you have it the throttle shaft may be loose and in need of bushings, or items internally may have been changed. I bought one on ebay and it arrived with (literally) globs of crud in the bores, as thought it had been in a bog for years!
Now I have one of the b.block 1.08's and it needs bushings. I paid $70 on ebay. I also have a 1.12 with the primaries sleeved down to 1.00. One of these days ....
BTW: That photo is NOT of a Pony carbs rebuild, but more like a Phony Carbs rebuild. The booster is the same color as the body. Nomally the boosters are the color of the acc.pump cover, that greenish color. B/c it is silver, that means spray can ... and anyone that would spray the workings of a carb has crossed the border to Tijuana. No thanks. Also, Pony would never put that hose barb fitting where the oem fuel filter goes. I suspect a cheapo rebuild in a Pony Carbs box with the install CD. Buyer beware. Crapola.
There is a thread out there somewhere that state look for a ford card and quitely inquire about the venturi to the seller. if it turns out it is what you are looking for wait till the very last minute and then bid on it you might be able to get it for a reasonable amount but you probably will still have to rebuild it.
I'm thinking you guys with carbs would get more bang for you buck by converting to the EFI engines. Most can be had on ebay and jy for less than a $1K, and doing the head only would be around $300. It's not a big net gain, but more torque as well. I went from a 82 with a 300 carbed engine to my current 94 with EFI. World of difference on hp, torque and driveablity. Less muss and fuss too!
My Bronco has stock gears and 39.5s wih 9 inches of lift. The carbed Bronco pushed tires and topped out at 55mph.
I swapped in an EFI 300 and now don't ever feel the need to regear. I will be keeping big tires and stock gears. Now tops out at 65-70 mph and plenty of get up and go.
The carb engine has more potential power because the efi head can't be messed with much. I am pretty sure as far as power on the 300 goes 4bbl>EFI, but that is just sheer power, but with the efi you get better drivability.
Getting all essentials together to do the durspark 2 swap, have distributor coil, module and the efi ehaust manifolds , called Clifford's and it may take a month form last week to get my intake.STill undecided. on a carb leaning to a
390cfm Holley and one have this Holley.
