Hey guys, I have a 73' f-250 with a 390. It has been running fine for awhile and now all of a sudden it wants to barely idle and dies often and sometimes when in gear it will die.
Doesn't give us alot to go on. As of right now, it could be a vaccum issue, a fuel issue or a spark issue. Have you checked anything out or can you give us a better idea of what's going on? If you're not a mechanic type or not sure about your way around the motor/engine bay, let us know that as well so we can walk you through some ideas. Give us a a bit more information and we can get ya started.
Yeah I am not the mechanic type unfortunately. Now that you mention vacuum lines I think I should take a good look at that because just a week or two ago it was not running well and it was because of the lines was not hooked up. I will have to check that. As far as more description, the truck had been running just fine, then today it didn't want to idle in park, it kept dying. The day before it ran completely out of gas, not sure if that would have anything to do with it. I will try to investigate more to get more details. Thanks!
Running out of gas could be anything from a clogged fuel line to a weak fuel pump...or just running out of gas in the tank of course.
If it's dieing at idle, I'd definatly look around at the vaccum lines. Make sure they are in good shape and on nice and properly secured. Just for poops n giggles, check and wiggle the carb (hopefully you can't) to see if the bolts may have come loose over time or that the gasket hasn't given up the ghost. Sooo many things to check, some more obvious than others when it come to a vacccum leak. Good luck and post up what you find.
