High Altitude

I am located in Denver and our fuel choices are normally 85, 87 and 89 octane. If I recall the octane is lower here due to the lack of air.

I will be travelling frequently between Denver and Montana elevations of 4000 - 8000 ft.

Will a chip upgrade still give enough of a performance boost even on the 89 octane fuel to make it worth while?

Anyone from a high altitude location care to comment? Any words from the webmaster is also appriciated.

Mike

The 91+ octane chip will work fine without pinging at higher altitudes where 89 is the "premium" octane. Your gain won't be as great but that has more to do with elevation than octane (gassers lose about 3% HP for every 1000 feet about sea level).

High Altitude

Live in Denver with a Diablo chip in my 97 Explorer 5.0, have had the truck up to the Continental Divide with no problems. Chip gave me "seat of the pants" performance increase with no pinging.

You should notice less problems with pinging at higher altitudes (except with blower applications). Don't forget to use up the lower octane high altitude fuels before hitting sea level (or carry a couple of bottles of ethanol to boost the octane if you need it).
